When you goin? There are many options for you now would be a fine time, I would suggest getting a map of the fish attractor sites DNR put out Clay lick area would probably be easiest for you to start out and find the crappie. A lot of structure there in a smaller area easier to find. You could go up Scott Creek arm or Caney Creek has a lot of stickups easy to find. I use double minnow rigs and spider rig but you could also use slip bobber or cast Maribu jigs. Summer time brings the fun of night fishing under the lights a lot of people do that very productive.

Cave Run is currently 23' over Summer Pool .... which means right now most of the KDFWR attractors are nearly 40' deep.

It's normally May before the lake comes UP to Summer Pool .... though, this year it may be May before it goes DOWN to Summer Pool.

I always used weedless jigs for casting around the wood, or a minner under a float ... usually in mid-late April. I fished the back end of Cassidy Ford Hollow most of the time I went. Though I do remember catching some Crappie dragging minners under floats along the front edge of the rock cliff bank between Muskie Bend & Shrout Hollow. I just don't remember if that was in early April or later. It's been decades since I fished Cave Run in the Spring.

Great info. Thanks. Where did you but your minnows? Which bait stops sell minnows at the lake?

Closest one to the lake that I know of is Fin-Fur & Feathers (606) 302-9070 and possibly Crash's Landing (606) 780-4260

And I believe Longbow Marina, way up in the river, advertises that they have "bait" ... but, that may or may not include "live bait".

There are several "bait & tackle" stores in the area surrounding the lake, but it would depend on which direction you were coming from as to whether or not they'd be worth checking on.

I guess if you coming from Ohio you be on 64 West. After going through Moorehead turning On Route 60. Before coming within 1/2 mile or so 801 junction there is a gas station and bait shop that sell minnows and other bait. Also if you was 0n 509 few miles from West Liberty there is a gas station and bait shop also they have a small diner they sell them.
