I caught one at Nolin last week the first one I've seem at this lake! We seen a creel man and told him he said it was a freak, I thought they were a breed of black crappie?

They are just simply a Black Crappie ... no more, no less. They just have a marker gene that creates the black pigmentation stripe. They're all over the Southeast ... either from stocking or by accidental transport (floods, washing thru dam turbines & locks, etc).
I've even caught them in Cedar Creek Lake ... and the Crappie in there were taken from hatchery stock & possibly from some of the local lakes.
In defense of the creel clerk ... he may have meant that it was a "freak" accident that this fish was in Nolin.... or that it's a "freak" of Nature. But, chances are ... he just didn't know

Where did you catch the blacknose crappie at in nolin? How was the overall fishing at nolin last week?
We were at the mouth of Dog creek, before the flood! I think we had 18 keeps? The Corp has closed dog creek ramp for the winter
