Exclamation How Is This Not Holding Crappie? (w/ pics)

    [IMG][/IMG]

I don't understand why this log jam is not holding any crappie? All i can manage to pull out is very small bass (5"-12") and small bluegill/sunfish.

The creek is near my home it empty's in the ohio river I have fished it hard over the past two weeks expecting the crappie to be heading into the creeks. I have fished all around it from the bank and from my canoe.

The log jam is less than 500 yards from the mouth of the creek.

The max depth is 10-12 feet.
-Is this not far enough back the creek?
    -Is this too much timber?
-Could they be holding up in the middle of the timber?

I have tried minnows, shad, wax worms, and charlie brewer sliders (several diff. colors)

Someone please give me some insight as to what I may be doing wrong.

    Thanks in advance,
    Boondock

Not sure where you are located, but if you have had the rains and floods like we have in my area, that mess may not have been there long enough to attract fish. It may have came in with high water, and next time may wash its way further back or out of the creek. It doesn't look like its been under the water too long, by the way the wood looks. If you had the in one of your local lakes, I think you would have a honey hole!!!

Maybe a big ole flathead catfish has the crappie run out of there?

It was much clearer than that earlier today. A buddy and I fished for about four hours, still no crappie. Managed to catch a bakers dozen of bass ranging between 8"-15".

Money in the bank that a big ol flathead is in there somewhere. You out to noodle one outta there next summer...:D
I do think at some point if there is enough bait around to hold some decent numbers of bass and its not that far from the main river then some crappie have to come up in there at some point. Might be a killer spot for winter if its deep as you say. You would need a 16 ft jig pole to get way back in there. Keep tryin, are there any more brush piles or stumps around that you fish.

    Default Here is the key...

Find the shad in your creek, you will find the crappie. No shad around the dock, no crappie. This is the pattern for creeks in the fall.

In that photo the water looks too clear. If you can see all the way to the bottom, that's too clear.
