crappie but the musky fishin' at cave run is excellent right now. I went this evening to try to troll for some crappie, caught a lot of white bass and ended up musky fishin' right before dark. In 30 min i had 4 musky swipe at a spinnerbait, hooked 2, landed one small one, other got off, and had a nice fish bite at it right by the boat, fat and about mid thirty inches. It was fun, you could see all the fish pop out and go after the bait. Anyways, im not much of a musky fisherman but had a good time tonight.
ps: No wonder there werent any crappie around, them musky are skeeery lookin, I wouldnt hang around them either...
I dont know, Ive never kept one. I have heard from folks who use to accidently catch em' in nets in the licking river said they were good. They fight so good I hate to keep one, they jump like a tarpon.
... it was "ok", but nothing special. I'll take a Walleye or Crappie, any day, over a Musky ... for table fare.
At Cave Run, I can't say as I've had a Musky hit my Crappie jigs ... but, I've certainly had them jump all over my favorite prespawn Bass bait, the jerkbait (chartreuse back/silver side/white belly Rebel Minnow)
Also used to hear alot of tournament Bass anglers warn about using a chartreuse spinnerbait at Cave Run ... seems as though the Musky liked 'em as much, or more, than the Bass did
I went the next evening and boated 3. Lost another and had a big un' follow to the boat. Saw some fellows catching some crappie in the timber too, not many but one every once and then. And are correct pappy, the chart spinnerbait was doin em' a number...
Sounds like you have become a musky fisherman. Are you hooked?
I was fishing a FOM tx a few years back throwing a hard jerkbait and caught a 40" musky. It was a lot of fun. Caught on a spinning rod and 8lb test line in early spring. 38 degree weather. If I lived as close as you do, I probably would be divorced! I need to get down there more. 2 hr drive for me.
Bassky
ekyslabber, good friend of mine and his grandson just headed up to Cave Run from BG, they are big Musky Fisherment. I gave him your report and they got real excited. Should be some good fishing for them considering the cold, rainy, dreary weather. Seems like the worst day to go fishing is the best day to catch a musky. I caught my first one when it was 19 degrees outside spitting snow.
Don't do much fishing for them now since I'm hooked on Crappie fishing. I prefer catching as to casting, if you know what I mean.
I actually went in the rain this afternoon. Brad, if ur family is up here I wouldnt mind maybe giving em' some folks to see up there that run some bait shops, both are guides, that will help point ya in the right direction. I have been doin very well considering this makes my third time out, problly beginners luck....Anyways, pm me or something and maybe you can let em' know whats goin on and where to look. Today was the first day after the front and they were kinda slow and getting comfortable. The next few days should be good though. I had two almost take the bait right by the boat this evenin. Its really fun fishin right now, not fun enuf to give up crappie fishin tho. just wish I had better crappie water, ohio river is fickle
PS Bassky, I get a nice chewin from time to time from my fishin habit, I have it worked out where its cheaper and easy now, tryin to plead for one of those HD units when that structure scan stuff comes out, gonna take some smooth operating there man
