When you get the duct seal, a trick to make it softer is to warm it a little in the microwave. It doesn’t take long.

you need to work it until you get all the air bubbles out. Some guys rig it to pour some water around the transducer, but you don’t need to if you get all the air bubbles out.

Here is a pic when I was using a Garmin 70dv. The battery is in the gray colored dry box. You can see the transducer in duct seal, and I used a ram ball and mount to attach the locator.

your Kilroy has the flat floor up front that I don’t have. On a Kilroy I’d probably cut out enough of that foam block to mount the transducer there.

Thanks for he info and the pic. You’re right, I will need to cut a little of the foam block out due to not having he same amount of floor space in mine. I really appreciate you taking time to send the picture. I may be icing you a shout if I run into any problems getting everything rigged up. Thanks again!

warhawk, how is the DownVu with that mounted in the hull?

Ive never tried it, but have read that its ok for 2d sonar but down or side imaging wont shoot thru the hull.

The 70dv worked fine in both 2d and dv modes. It was a battery hog though, there’s a 15ah battery in that dry box. Only good for 7-8 hours with the 70dv.

I replaced it with a Striker 4 with chirp, I’ve used the Striker for days without recharging the battery.

Clangford, I tidied up the wires and made it a lot cleaner installation with the Striker.

Warhawk, are you able to get water temp readings through the hull? Are they accurate? I just now thought about that.

When you mount the transducer in the duct seal, do you put the duct seal around it or do you put the duct seal on the hull, then push the transducer into it? Thanks Todd

I have the Striker 4DV on my Trident 13. I rigged up a PVC arm for the transducer since I didn't know if I wanted to drill into the kayak. The Garmin works well enough and I can see it well, but it's mounted right in front of me on a hatch lid that's between my legs. It's plenty bright on bright, sunny days, but I have to angle it to prevent glare. Like another member said, the DownVu isn't amazing, but works ok. 2D does seem to be very sharp. The GPS feature and ability to mark waypoints is really nice. For the money, not a bad unit at all, IMHO.

I have ran the striker 4 for the last year and i highly recommend it to anyone. I would be sure to keep the plugs coated in dielectric grease, my power plug got slightly corroded and it was enough to somehow erase all of my waypoints and reset the unit. when my transducer plug got corroded it caused false depth and sonar readings (1.8 feet). I wish garmin would incorporate screw in terminals on these units.

Yes, I get temp readings. I’ve never been able to directly compare them to another unit to know how accurate it is.

i saw a tip online about heating the duct seal in the microwave to make it more pliable. I did this, then formed it into the rough shape of the transducer, made a “patty” of duct seal. I put that on the hull of the kayak, then worked the transducer into with a rocking and twisting mostion to get any air bubbles out. Then I formed a fillet of duct seal materialpartway up the sides of the transducer all the way around. I do not add any water to it, never have. And the transducer is stuck tot he hull of the kayak, almost like it was glued in place. It is still removeable, but wil, stay in place when the kayak is upside down.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try this with my canoe.
