    Default Kayaks and gators

I fish a lake that is pretty infested with gators. Anyone had any experience as to how they react to kayaks??

gators don't think kayak's are very tasty, but certainly like the taste when the human falls out of the kayak

I fished the Everglades in a canoe and the only problem I ever had with a gator was when I got between one near the canal bank and open water. He almost capsized me when he went under the boat trying to get away. I did notice they were much less likely to hang around when I was in my 17' Grumman (aluminum) then when I was in my 10' green fiberglass solo canoe. I always chalked it up to the Grumman was much noisier and they heard me coming and avoided me all together.

I have figured out that gators swim faster than I can paddle my kayak. My son and I saw one swimming this morning in the creek and he was running off and leaving us.

Paddle around them all the time. If a kayak looked even remotely close to a heron I might worry. Just use some common sense and avoid a big bull thats posturing or signs on a bank that momma gator might have a nest she is protecting. Try and avoid touristy areas where the possibility of someone having fed them exists. Most gators I see get outta dodge real quick when approaching them.

Agree with above post. USE COMMON SENSE. Gators can be agressive during breeding season. Last year, I had one that was longer than my kayak go under my boat and pop the bottom twice. It then grabbed my stringer of Bream and cut the cord. If it had been a metal stringer it would have flipped. Never have a stringer around sharks or gators . I knew that. Just lazy, arrogant and stupid. I learned a valuable lesson. If a gator acts agitated and swims back and forth between you and the shore, there is a next and you better leave. If a bull puts his head or tail up and vocalizes, he is asking you to leave.
