    Question Please Help Identify

    Hi Fishers,
If you could please help identify this bird, I would be interested to know what the heck it is. Thanks.

I was out quail hunting at a Walk-In area near Clinton Reservoir when my dog, Daze, went into a half-hearted point, and the rest of the story is almost unbelievable. I go stomping and kicking around in the CRP ahead of her, and roust out this crazy looking bird with a broken wing. It's got a red head, blue body, and yellow feet and beak (see attached photos). It looks to me like a cross between a parrot, a woodpecker, and a crow...

Anyway, this bird pops out of a clump of grass, turns around and makes a sound like, "Rawwwk Crawwwk" or something like that. I wasn't sure what it was, so I take out my camera-phone and take a couple pictures since it's obviously not going anywhere with a broken wing...

While I'm snapping pictures, the bird is trying to sneak away and Daze is trying to prevent it from sneaking away. Once we have the bird kind of corraled, Daze starts creeping in, and bird and dog wind up beak-to-nose. The whole scene is kind of frozen for a second or two and then the bird lets out this hiss/growl, like, "SSSSSSCORRRRRBORRRRD". That was too much for Daze, and she pounced on the bird with a fury I've never seen before. The bird is hissing and pecking, and she's biting him and shaking him.

After a minute or two of total chaos, she finally gets him subdued, brings him over, and spits him out at my feet. I wring his neck to put him out of his misery and then toss him back into the grass. I thought briefly about keeping the bird to try to identify it since I didn't know what it was, but I didn't want to get in trouble with the ranger...

As we're walking away from the scene, Daze walks back over to the bird, whirls around and drops a big ol' pile right on him. (Note the cold, aloof expression on her face as she says "farewell".):D

If anybody can please help me identify the most unfortunate bird in history, I would sure appreciate it. I have GPS coordinates of the "pile" if anybody in that area wants to check it out.

    Thanks for your help.

I realize it may have not made it to it's next birthday but why make sure ? Many birds do a broken wing dance to protect their young.

Being from Missouri, I would have expected you to celebrate. I can assure you 100% that no young birds were starved. :D

That's the rare Innsea bird. That's why you didn't know what kind it was. Most people would cherish having one. You should of took care of it and took it back with ya! They aren't out much West of Topeka. You had your chance and your dog laid a steamer on it. So much for a National Championship coming.:D:D:D:D:D <*)}}}><

I'm a transplant from Iowa. Maybe that's why I don't get the above.
