Are there any Crappies in Lake Shawnee?? My son lives in Topeka, just a few minutes from the lake. He asked me if the lake is any good for Crappies. I have no clues on this lake. I did see where they have put brushpiles in the lake. We would appreciate any information that would shed some light on the Crappies at this lake.

I would drive a few mile north to Banner Creek Lake , just west of Holton, football shaped black crappie to be caught there. There are some State fishing lakes along 36 that are supposed to have good crappie fishing. I believe that they are called Brown and Pony Express. You can find reports and fishing forecast for all region 2 fishing spots with the URL provided above...Good Luck
Remember "I" before "E," except in Budweiser
I think Pony Express is in Missouri but there is a Sabetha Pony Creek in Kansas and this is the link.

I used to fish lake shawnee all the time when I lived in Topeka, and my father still lives near there. Unless you're fishing for stocked trout or catfish, I would go somewhere else. Good luck to you either way.
I am just pullin' your leg.:D
Thanks for the feedback. Never know about these city lakes. Little city lake here in Salina gave up some big Crappies last spring including biggest in the local Ace hardware contest. Also some decent stringers of keepers came out of the lake. Up until last spring I would have told you that it only had "aquarium size" Crappies.
Banner Creek is one on the list that we want to fish. Chatt has told me a lot about that lake.
ksf99, for your question about lake shawnee, yes there are black and white crappie in this lake along with some pretty nice walleyes. Tell your boy to go down to the heated dock this winter and talk to some of the ole boys there, they will fill him in. Also if you're in Marion some time go out to the city lake there and try the heated dock there, not too many years ago a young girl fishing w/granddad, caught, at the time a new state record crappie it went around 4. something and was white to the best of my old memory. When you are talking about Salina city lake are you referring to the old Jarvis lake off of east iron st. That was what they used to call it when I was at Salina High and running around with the Jarvis boys, hanging out and partying out there, brings back fun memories. See Yaaaaaaaaa!
dkv, they call it Lakewood here in Salina located between North and Iron just east of Ohio. The level came up in 07 when we had some high water causing a dike to break. Several species were added including Gar. KWP stocks the lake with Trout and Catfish plus Wipers. Average Crappie size has increased this year with 2 lbers showing up regularly.
I stop by the heated dock at Marion once in a while but have not seen much caught there. I hear best fishing is from Midnight to daybreak in the heated dock.
