Default "Here's your sign"

Been working on trying to get the boat to "fire" for about two weeks. I changed the plugs, new gas and fiddled with or tightened everything else. On a scale from 1 to 10 for mechanical ability I am about a -1. Changing the plugs was a challenge. Still, the 30 hp Evinrude would not turn over, it would crank like a champ but not start.

Finally I threw in the towel before I really screwed something up and gave up and took the boat up to United boat repair in Stilwell. I pull in, expecting to leave the boat for the week and spend hundreds of dollars getting it up an running.

The repair guy and myself take a walk around the boat, take the cover off the motor, everything looks normal. He walks over to the console to turn the key and stops dead in his tracks. He looks at me with a "Here's your sign" kind of face, and says, "you dont have the kill switch." Sure enough I left the boat in the parking lot one day and removed the depth finders, trolling motor, KILL SWITCH, etc. so nothing would get stolen while I was on the water with a friend. I put the kill switch under the seat and never thought about it again.

After I stopped laughing at myself, I asked him what I owe him. He said in a sarcastic voice, "$25 outta cover your stupidity."

One time in my old Crestliner I was fishing way back in Deer Creek at Clinton and the wind was fierce from the east, so trying to be safe I had my life jacket on and the kill switch clipped to it while heading there from the Marina cove. After fishin for a while I decided to head of to Rock Creek. Well the dang thing wouldn't start, so I did the usually choked the crap out of it, checked the fuses pulled plugs and cleaned them, cranked the it till the battery wouldn't turn it over anymore. Finally totally pissed of I dropped the trolling motor and headed for the ramp, once I hit the trees where the hazzard bouys are I decided to get the manual out and read it since it was taking forever to get all the way to the ramp. Just as I hit the jetty at the marina cove I get to the troubleshooting part that says "chack KILL SWITCH" I immediatly look down and see it dangling from my life jacket. So I swap batteries from TM to try and crank it over and there ain't enough juice left in them either to crank it over. So after fighting it on the trailer I just went home and got drunk! Took me a few months before i coul dtell anyone about that. Good to know I ain't the only one that has that type thing happen to him.

Almost had the old kill switch kill a couple trips when I have been with other people. Luckily both times it was when we were putting in. Both times I was sitting in the vehicle as they were trying to get the motor started. Once the boat was still on the trailer in the water...the other it had floated out. Both guys were swearing up a storm. I yelled to the one that had floated off "Kill switch" and he yelled back "kill what switch". I knew he was in trouble but luckily another boater got to him and explained what to do. The other one knew right away the problem when I yelled kill switch. I had it happen once to me, luckily at the ramp. It's once of those mistakes you never repeat.

Ya, it's happen to me also. I had a father and 2 children as clients. Well as the story goes, started fine in the morning and most of the day. The Opti fires up real quick, so when it cranked just a little longer,,,well I knew something was wrong. Checked the fuel, fuses and cursed a little. As I reach for the key to try it again,,,there it was. One of the little B,,,,oys had pulled the safety cord out.. I should of been mad but was gratefull that I didn't have to get towed in to find it. Now I ALWAYS look at it. <*)}}}><
You'll see the difference,,,on the end of your line!

This reminds me of a time I was stranded in someone's back yard, a complete stranger for all intents and purposes, due to a van that wouldn't start. I was traveling several hundred miles along with a full load of passengers that were excited to go on an extended camping trip in the mountains. We thought perhaps the battery was completely shot so we slept in the yard. The next morning we tried to secure a ride to the autoparts store but that didn't pan out so I walked four miles to buy a new battery. After the new battery was installed and the key was turned, nothing happened -- no clicks, no attempt to turn over, absolutely nothing.

This van had an automatic transmission, I had always driven standards.... Anyway, this freaked out looking fellow that lived next door to where we were trapped dropped by to see if he could help. He took a seat in the captain's chair while we stood in front of the van looking at the engine like buffoons. About about two seconds the van fired up, he jumped out, threw his hand up in the air and began walking away shaking his head. He yelled back over his shoulder "you left it in D you stupid f#$%@$%"
