I have no idea exactly what the odds might be for a crappie in this scenario, but if it was me I would surely find out.

About 10 years ago there was a 7# largemouth that lived on a sunken stump in a farm pond I used to fish. I C&Red that fish three times, and my college roommate caught her once or twice over a period of two years. As far as I know she was still in there when we graduated... We always caught her in exactly the same spot and I caught her on the same lure AND presentation all three times.

If it was me, I would go back to exactly the same stump and start with whatever it was you all were doing when you hooked her the first time. Just my 2 cents.:D If it was truly a 3#er, I would probably release her onto a plaque on my living room wall.
I am just pullin' your leg.:D

I know that haunting feeling, the kid and I left a big ol' sow at clinton this spring. and whenever i look at the boat I still see that dinner plate laying on top of the water laughing at us!

I know the feeling of losing a good fish, but not a 3# crappie! You're at least going to go back and try again, right? I daydream about catching a LEGIT 2#er some day. A 3# would be like... well, I don't even dream that big.:D

I hope you go back and catch her. It would make a good fish story.:D

The key to the stumps is bubbles. Yep bubbles just like the ones that you made as a kid in the bathtup. Big slabs eat a lot so they get gas. What do they do when they get gas? They pfart and take the pressure off just like you do. Some of the old pros claim they could find fish just by sticking their nose in the air. Chatt may have that talent. I know he can scent a good bar b que hut 20 miles away. Most of us with less olafactory senses just look for the bubbles next to trees. Big bubbles....slabs...raunchy smelling bubbles......monster slabs. Just keep your eyes and nose to the water and you will find the slabs.

Hey KSFISH 99, sometimes it's hard to see those bubbles when your eyes are watering from the noxious fumes coming from the guy in the front of the boat let alone trying to decipher which gas you're smellin, his (LBM) or the slabs:D
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught!

Now you know Slabby Joe why Chatt has the tandem seats in the front...gas blows back. Good fishing partners should always advise others of their previous evenings diet...it's good etiquette and a rule set down by Izaack Walton.

Getting back to the original question I think the answer is no. I think the crappie would return to the same stump but would require a different bait and or presentation. The reason is because crappie are way smarter than bass.
