    Default Dad's day saugeye

I tried a spider-rig for the first time ever on Father's day (kind of). I set up one rod for spider rigging, and set it to depth while we fished with our typical methods. I was marking some nice fish about 10' down, so I dropped it down 10' and forgot about it while we dipped jigs around docks and cast slip-bobbers.

Anyway, I got lucky and while travelling from one dock to the next, my (single-pole) spider rig got hammered by a very nice fish. I told dad to, "get the net." But he didn't even flinch. I said, "GRAB THE NET, DAD, it's a big walleye." Again, he didn't move... He thought it had snagged the bottom and I was just BSing him. So, I ended up netting this dandy saugeye myself. Dad was speechless.

It weighed 5#8oz, and had brown markings clear around on the bottom of its belly. Most of the saugeyes I have caught are white on the belly, but not this one. It was brown/white with at least 50% brown.

I was glad I got to take my dad fishing on Father's day, and extra cool because I got to experiment with a new rig/technique AND I caught the fish on one of my new homemade soft-plastic fish.

It was Wabaunsee. Dad caught the most fish for sure, even if I caught the biggest. He also managed to snag an old paint can half-full of cement. It was a battle for the ages getting that thing reeled in! Should have wired some brush to it before we dropped it back down...

P.S. Thanks everybody! BTW, I poured my first beavertails tonight. Can't wait to try them out!

Will do, Chad. My darling wife usually keeps a death grip on the camera, but I will snatch it when she is distracted and post some pics this week.

I had a little difficulty reproducing the mold I made to pour the beavertails. The first couple molds came out fine, but then they started having major flaws. The humidity got awful when I was making them, so hopefully that was the problem... Lots of tiny bubbles... I'm still experimenting so it's fun.

Anyway, I was able to make a couple copies of the mold to speed up production.
