Default East Wind

Why oh why do I go fishing when the wind is out of the East. Again today the wind had me at bay. Went to Banner Creek caught only four keeper and six dinks. If is was not for trolling bandits the day would of been a total lost. Do you guys dislike the East wind, or is it just me.

if you were out on the water then it was'nt a total loss. i would of gladly traded a day on the lake instead of spending the day at work.

My Dad has a saying about the east wind " when the wind is out of the east you catch the least". I have found his saying to be true.

I have heard that one before...Also if its out of the west the fish bite the best and if its out of the South you have to put it in their mouth...Can never remember the North saying....But what the hell....does not ever stop me from going...I have a bad itch to scratch this weekend......Can't wait! And Hawks Football on Saturday...Can't beat that weekend! Football and Fishin...

Default East wind

I am no expert, and my experience on the water is certainly less than some of you other guys. However, in my experience, that old saying is BS. We hauled in some monster loads of crappie this Spring in an East wind... On many occasions. From what I have experienced, stable weather is much more critical than the direction of the wind. 2 days of reasonably stable weather has been my rule of thumb all year.

Also, I look for the water level to be reasonably stable. If it's dropping or rising fast, I usually have some trouble finding fish. That's just what I have found.

High winds out of any direction may turn on the fish sometimes, but it also makes boat positioning so difficult that I lose a lot of fish because I'm more focused on the trolling motor than on my fishing.

That's my 2 cents.

It seems that the wind has been easterly most of August. I agree that the stability of the weather matters a great deal. Monday, the wind was easterly and I killed them at Hillsdale. Not a lot of keepers, but I probably caught around 30 in a couple hours.

My experience is like Ronald's and Hef's... Perhaps because there is often a wind shift to the east or northeast when a cold front arrives. Have had a bite stop dead with a wind shift to the east and the temperature dropped. Did ok on Wed in shifting winds, bites would come in quieter (but not dead calm) breeze between strong northerly gusts.

Wind was ESE on Sunday, and blowing pretty swiftly. One of my best fishing days ever! Also, I was getting buzzed by the holiday lake traffic and it didn't seem to matter to the fish. Ski boats and jet skis whizzing by on both sides... Meanwhile, I was hammering walleyes, smallmouth bass, and two big channel cats. I even caught a couple crappies drifting jigs on the bottom.

This morning, the wind was more from the Southeast. Very slow day, but managed to catch a few. The wind was much more gusty, and seemed to come straight from the South at times, and then switch more from the East. Boat control was pretty challenging. My foot was getting a real workout on the trolling motor pedal! I was looking longingly at the up-wind side of the lake, but I'm glad we stayed at the down-wind side. Dad caught a real nice one.
