PC, we were using 1/32oz jig heads with a lively minner dipping trees in less than 10ft of water. Last Friday we had a thunder storm greet us while at breakfast. I'm sure the bite was affected as it got better as the day went on. I had my line marked with a bobberstop string set at 4ft. Slowly lower this down next to stumps and slower lift it. You are looking for just a tick. When you feel the tick,,,STOP!!! jig it a little and wait for it to get heavy, lite, or move off,,, SET THE HOOK!! Now if they whack it,,,set the hook but most of the time it will be a small one or one of those nasty green perch. We found the best bites came from 10ft but most were dinks. This is also the season of algae blooms. If you notice that the water get browner, like it looks muddy, head back to another area. FISH SHALLOW!!! You'll be surprised!! <*)}}}><

Chatt,

Thanks for the info. I have been fishing deep water 20+ and pulling out some ok numbers. So I tried going up to my favorite 10' winter spot and put about dozen in the boat. Your right on trying to figure out the bite. Even after a couple of hours I was still setting the hook to early. I don't normally fish this shallow this time of year but it seems to work. Nothing big but it was nice pulling some fish out.

How does time of day and shade affect this tech? I have a good spot that has suspened brush about 4' under the water in 10' of water and after about 4 in the afternoon it all in shade. Will the shade help, hurt or spread the fish out?

Walleye bite is still ok in the afternoon at Hills.

I'm not sure that shade or time of day makes any difference. Happy you are trying this method and you should even try shallower. I don't look for brush of any kind. I'm looking for trees like a fence post. I really do believe that the bigger crappie are like those big bass. They like to own their spot. So the ticks are the crappie trying to run the minner off it's spot. That's why you don't feel the hit as it is just moving the minner away. I'm just guessing though. <*)}}}><
