Rusting Hooks on Jigs?

Some of my older stored zonker jigs with bronze & red hooks had some nasty rust spots especially on the shank under the hide. Tossed the worse ones, but two that looked borderline useable actually broke on battles with must have been record fish! Just got a new batch of zonker strips and chanced a taste test and found the hide salty! A good rinse in warm fresh water seems to have leached out most of the salt. Anyone else have a similar problem?

alot of times the tanic acid or lime used in the tanning process dosn;t come out untill it's wet usally that's when it's married to metal OPPS! after awhile they will eat up any type of metal.

Just today I noticed a new Roadrunner had rusted- used it once, threw it in the box and now its got rust, stained the feathers... Its a real Roadrunner, not a cheap knock-off, too. The hooks are dull, too- right out of the package. And they're not cheap jigs...

Ooh, sh**, "tanic acid or lime used in the tanning process", guess it wasn't too smart to have a lick.

Some Roadrunner knock-off "Pony Head" jigs I've seen online offer better hooks than OEM.

Un-fortunately, this has been happening to the road runners for a while. I've had a lot of my customers switch to the ones I started pouring. I make my own pony heads, with Mustad Ultra-Point BLN hooks. They are more rust resistant since they are nickel plated. I believe many store bought jigs still use bronze hooks. Bronze hooks are notorious for rusting if not dried thoroughly before closing the lid.

Ive gotten to the point where i will not throw a bait that has been wet back in the box. I let them sit in my cup holder or on the deck for a few days before i put them away. I also have switched to black nickle steel jig hooks. Also my tackle box have everything stored in individual containers so even if the box gets wet from spray or what ever they jigs are still dry. I posted a pic in the above thread on jig organizing.

Great advice from all- Thanks- I WILL be drying my jigs before puttin em back in the box. Funny, but my saltwater jigs do NOT rust... Ah, well.

It's the tinned hooks.
