Hey perfect timing... may I borrow this thread?
My vise is wearing out and not holding like it should. The business end of the vise sits at a 45 deg. angle and was thinking of looking for one that is horizontal. Seems like I am spinning it and trying to get on the floor or over top of my tie to see whats going on, just always at a wierd angle.
Any of you have a preference or what do you have that you like?
The one he got is the best true rotary below $100. I would look at the Peak if you want a really nice well made vise for about $140. If you truly want a horizontal vise I would look at HMH as they make that vise for doing tube flies and it is flat. Renzetti make a great vise, but we are moving up the price a little. I have a Renzetti Salt Water Traveler that I replaced with a Nor-Vise that I use today. Some really like the Nor and some don't. I did and do as it is a totally different vise that has benefits other than just a rotary.
Tell us you price range and maybe we can help more. Some really low end vises are good and hold hooks well, but it all depends on what you want out of a vise. I like looking at all sides, and being able to spin on my thread base, etc.

Unfortunatley, the $60-$70 dollar range is in my sights. I usually learn to get by with what I have. Not sure mine is true rotary, it spins on a threads so you can only go so many rotations and have to go back the other way.
Mine now has sweet spots that I have to use to hold the hook, around ten years old and used to clamp things a little too tight. In my Jan's Netcraft catalog they have some that look to have an adjustable angle (Odyssey Spider Vise - $79.95). That $$ would be about the MAX I could spend without my wife kicking my !!! and changing the locks.
What is the purpose for the 45 degree angle? Just seems an odd angle when just about any fly or jig is sitting horizontal in the water, I like to think of how it will look in the water. My neck probably gets sore mostly from holding my head at a 45 deg to see what it looks like horizontal! lol
my danvise cost me 75.00

I LOVE my Danvise...I haven't tied a whole bunch of flies...maybe 20. But I really love it. Just be SURE not to over tighten the vise...the only thing I do not like about it is the throat of the vise needs to be a few inches longer...they make an extension...I've about got used to it though. Very well made though. The composite constrution and tolerances are very impressive on it.
With my 45 degree angle I just level the hook out....with it being a true rotary if you put the head in at 0 degrees (level) when you turn it, it will stay that way.

I guess I am going to have to get to a shop and get some hands on knowledge, closest place is over an hour drive. I've only ever owned 2 and still don't think I quite get the "true rotary" thing. Does only the clamp itself spin? My whole shaft spins, has a threaded section that runs through a hole in the vertical arm. I am going to have to see if I can dig up my old vise and take a pict, you will see why I'm a little slow in the equipment terminology. The one I use now was a gift so have just learned to deal with it.
Here is the pict I was talking about. Kinda scary to think I used to use it pretty often, gotta use a screw driver to clamp the hook!!! I still do use it maybe once or twice a year, to hold ice jigs while I solder them. I have a book that came with it as well, probably a collectors item by now. I actually used it regularly for 5 or 6 yrs.
On the plus side, maybe have some extra $ by the end of next month and be able to get me a new vise. Mentioned it to my wife and she didn't throw anything at me... chances looks good! :D
I used a Danvise for a long time, and it is a very good vise for the money, now I use a Renzetti and it is a great vise.
