    Default Squirrel tail jigs?

I've got a squirrel tail, and a grey fox tail from last hunting season that I want to use to tie a few jigs. I've heard they're great on gills.

Does anyone have any advice? What size jig head / hook? What about a pattern or example that I can follow?

    Thanks in advance!

Go to YouTube. Type in squirrel tail crappie/blue gill jigs. This will lead you to many options. Most are simple and effective...Good luck!

Fox squirrel tails are molted and can represent a few different types of minnows. On the Susquehanna water shed we have a minnow called a testlated darter. On the Ohio-Mississippi shed they have the Johnny darter. These look almost identical. Some colder lakes and streams have sculpins. These are the minnows you could immaterial with that material. You can go online and look up these and tie accordingly. To my knowledge these minnows do not have a swim bladder so you should fish them near the bottom and on as even retrieve as possible. ( not a jigging up and down motion).

Here some squirrel tail jigs I tied. Not the best, but they catch fish. I use #4 and #6 eagle claw 570 or 575 hooks. Name: IMG_0268.jpg

Squirrel tails are good for tying and you can get them in nice dyed colors as well!

    I like a 1/64 or 1/80oz head.
I have my guy tie it like a marabou.
    About 2" long.
