I used to use a heat gun then I moved onto a lighter for heating. Now I have made me an alcohol burning candle and that is how I heat my heads now. my finger got tired doing the other ones.

I have used my alcohol burner for 13 years or more and tried a heat gun, but found more than a few things I hate about the heat gun.
First I needed to learn again how to heat right, length of time and how far from head and how long of each size head.
Not to mention how noisy they are and then having a good place to put them down to use and control.
With my flame is take less time to heat a head so I can move faster.
So for me I would quit painting before using a heat gun, but that is just me and would much prefer listening to music than a heat gun.

I used the heat gun for quite a few years I decided to get a alcohol lamp and try it I definitely will not be going back to the heat gun the alcohol lamp does a fantastic job also no noise which I liked the most and I don't have a cord run down all over the place .
I have bought probably 5 or 6 all trying to replace the one I got at Barlow's, but in the end when I did replace it I got another one from them, lol! I even bought a stainless Steel one, but the wick size was smaller and I didn't like that flame as much. It's not especially great, but I like the size of the wick which makes flame size. It's clean burning and cheap fuel. Be careful not to over tighten the lid on as it will be very hard to get off again, lol! Still all you need to is find you count on jig size as how long to keep head in flame. Personally my count time is like this....
I count and flip side and count, then dip.
1/32 count 3 flip count 3 at a decent rate or you will melt the head off the hook, lol! Then dip.
1/16 count 4 flip count 4, flip pass through and dip.
1/8 count 4 flip count 4, flip count 2 flip count 2 and dip.
1/4 pretty much same as 1/8 as we are just heating the surface for the most part!
You need develop a count speed that first you.

I have used propane torch, alcohol lamp, and hot plate.
As far as overall speed goes, the hot plate works best for me and is easiest to get consistent temperature. However, the hooks will basically reach the same temp as the heads. I usually pick up the hook with my right hand (ouch!) and grip the hook eye with my special pliers in my left hand.
Next best is the alcohol lamp. The hook doesn’t get very hot and the heat is fairly control able.
The propane torch makes a little noise, is more expensive to operate than alcohol, but is faster.

Thanks for the valuable info guys....
Think I'll get one, I looked at the ones Barlows has a while back....
I use a heat gun - variable speed - mostly because of the custom painting I do.
The embossing heat guns are great for small stuff.
All the stuff junglejim does is with a BIC lighter!
