News From Todays Trip
I just have to tell y'all about today. Met Billy, a good friend of mine, at the ramp shortly after daybreak. He and I are on the same page in many ways so the day always has promise from the beginning when he and I fish together. Slid the boat off and ran about 400 yds to stop#1. I've been talking up how much fun tying is and how well I think certain patterns will work. We both tie on one of my ties and begin. Fish on first cast, but a dink. Gotta start somewhere. In about 45 minutes or so we had 4 or 5 in the box, and Billy releases a nice pound and a half Smallie. Off to new territory. We get to a dropoff I know and mark some stuff, throw a few markers and back off to begin. Y'all told me about the fish liking the all gray maribou I had tied, this was a good time to see about it first hand. Drifting around and droppin jigs when "THUMP"
. Set the hook and over the side he comes. Cant see the jig. At all. It was so far down his throat I had to get the hemostats to get it back. We took about 6 more keepers and a few dinks from this spot and most all of them hit in the same fashion, suckin the jigs deep
. These fish weren't tasting or playing, they were eating!! All the Crappie fishing I have done, and all the colors of all the styles none have been taken so aggressively and so deep. You can look on my post "going gray, mostly" and the jig is top left. I used a silver tinsel chenille and a few strips of real skinny red flash, lead head and silver maribou. It'll be one of my go to jigs from here on. Finished the day with 12 fish from 11 to 13 and lost a pig I never turned. 10 of these were on my jigs.:D Naaaah, I'm not hooked. Much.
Wake me up early,
Be good to my dogs,
and teach my children to pray.
