    Default Sauger jigs

I want to try tying some sauger jigs for this winter but I am not sure what material would be the best to use? I typically use 1 ounce jigs with a stiff nylon type skirt material. Any ideas where to get this type of material?

Jann's netcraft out of Ohio might have it. We have a lot of sauger in our
lake. I use barred feathers, bucktails and fishair. Mainly 1/8 and 1/4 oz jig heads. My best so far is 23 inches around 4 lbs. Good eatin!

Kip or bucktail would make some nice jigs. They have the same feeding habit as their cousin the Walleye.

Your post stimulated my curiosity as I have sauger in my local river. I've caught them incidentally while fishing for smallmouth bass. Also, I've caught them while bank fishing jigs along the shores of North Chickamauga Creek (Tennessee), below the dam at Chickamauga Lake, at various times during the year.

I've read that sauger anglers like to attach treble hook "stingers" to their jigs with leaders, since many assert that they are short-strikers. They tip their jigs with minnows. So, it's possible that the jig skirt isn't much more than an additional color attractant for this particular case.

If you plan to tip them with minnows, I'd stick with nylon or a generic polyester material. It's durable. A readily available source can be found at your local Dollar Tree. Their hair extensions for kids are a pretty good source of material. The colors include red, purple, orange, blue, lemon-lime, copper-brown, and blonde, just to name a few.

No minnow? Use a synthetic or dyed natural hair to provide attraction with action.

Mildly curious here , are you sure you meant 1 ounce is your favorite for saugeye ? Personally I have never used over 1/4 ounce jig for sauger. Mainly 1/8 and 1/16 oz is what I toss at them.

I always fish for them like I would jumbo perch. Seems to work for me but I very seldom fish for walleye/ sauger/ saugeye. I just might learn something here.

I know this one is old. But we for the most part always use from 3/4 oz to 1.5 oz. And 1 oz or 1 1/4 oz being the most used. But we fish current and keep the Sauger Jig straight up and down under the boat.
For the ones used smaller jigs are you casting to them? Rather then fishing deep water in current as we do here on the Tn river?
Also HogDog we use Fishair on most of ours Fish Hair

Also use a Stinger hook on them and a minnow also. Some days we can and do catch as many or more using plastic over minnows but most times times there a 2" Minnow on my jig.
I would love to find other ways to fish for them other then deep water and big jigs like we always do. I have caught them in the spring on gravel banks tossing 1/4 oz jigs. But they have to go shallow also in the winter time.

If your looking for some kind of stiff synthetic material I have a bunch I bought a couple years back and just don't use it much. I like it, just always pick something else to tie with.

Anyway let me know by PM if interested and I will tell you more.
