curing powder paint

Hello

I tried powder paint for the 1st time yesterday and after I heated the jig dipped it knocked off excess and hung it on the rack they looked good BUT then I put them in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes like back of paint said and the paint on most of the jigs ran to a point so know I have alot of cone head jigs lol. I assume its because I got to much paint on the jig but not sure how to get less. I heated dipped knocked off excess I did notice the paint melted right away is my jigs to hot and not getting enough time to knock off excess before it melts?

Joe sounds like to much paint on them.Watch your jig as it heats you will see the heat line run thru it once you see that swirl it in the paint real fast no more than a second is needed in the paint.With a little practice and a few jigs you will get the hang of it.If you like send me a pm.

Yes your jig is 2 hot when your dipping them. I bet if you look close. Theres some smoke coming off the jig when dipped in the powder?
I run mine back through the heat gun to set the powder. And doing that, Stops any running. But I am not sure a cone head is a bad thing. Just not good if your going to sell them. But for use, I had one last year that caught fish good. Until I lost it .

Definitely too much paint. I tell you the steps that I use.
1 - heat the head for 4-5 seconds with a lighter, candle or alcohol flame. No longer
2 - dip into powder swipe from side to side take no longer that one second at the most. That is your problem.
3 - tap on side of container to rid of excess powder.
4 - place on oven rack for 20 minutes at 300 degrees.
5 - let cool.
6 - paint and dress jig.
7 - catch lots of fish.

Yep, it's too hot. Hold it over your heat source a few seconds less and that should fix it.

Let me clarify my above response. I think it is a combo problem. Too much heat that gives you too much paint. I little of both will do you. Don't worry, everyone has probably had that issue when first starting. I did!
Just remember 4 seconds of heat no more and just swipe the jig in the powder to cover it and tap off the extra. done.
You will get the hang of it.
You can even try backing the heat of your oven down to 300 degrees. It will be fine.

Just remember to fluff up your paint too pretty often if not using a fluid bed. If it's packed down you will get too much paint as well.

No need to bake the jigs,they will do fine without baking.....Tknight
