Default What's Your Choice?

What do most of you use for the tail when tying jigs:

Marabou,Hackle,Kiptail or I have seen some tied with silicone skirting?

You name it and I have tried it, but like hackle the best. I feel that it has alot to do with what you are going after and the time of year it is, as to what you need to tie on for a skirt dressing. Some things seem to work better in colder water than others so you always have to experiment, or at least I do, as I can never leave well enough alone...

By the way Grousefly those round head 1/32 jig heads I ordered from you work great for tying crappie jigs.

I can paint them any color that you may need unless it is some sort of custom shade and I may even try that. I have mixed custom colors for jig heads before so I can usually come up with just about any color and or size.

After tying some hair jigs, I won't be using a lot of marabou anymore.
I been using bucktail and kip. Our dog is a nice cream color, wonder
if the Wife would notice a little snip here and there.

I like marabou tails. I like the way they breathe when moving in the water.

I can't seem to leave well enough alone either. That being said, nothing seems to work like gangbusters all the time, and this gives us an excuse to tie alot of different stuff. I favor kiptail, but it seems like half of what I buy mailorder, don't meet my standards. Have been eyeballing some goat hair on some flytying websites too. Marabou works real good on a chennille bodied jig, and I have a freind that complained to me that he had some jigs years ago that really did well, and he couldn,t find anymore. I said to him, show me one! He dug one up that had seen better days. I tied him thirty or so, and to this day he thinks I am the man. lol This jig was a 1/32 oz. ballhead, no collar, on a #2 gold hook. Blaze orange head, small black eyes. yellow chart. or green chart. body and a white marabou tail. I tied him some on #6, #4 & #2 hooks, all 1/32 oz. He fishes them under a slip cork, just the jig by itself, and bumps it along. I have another freind that uses calftail hair pinkie style jigs under a bobber, tipped with a minnow or peice of worm. He shakes his rod tip to cause the cork to jiggle a little. He wears me out everytime I go with him. That jig uses kiptail only from the neck on back behind the bend of the hook. He favors a pale chart. color for the head and hair. I have learned to pay attention to the older guys, and it has led to some nice jig designs. There is another one they keep talking about, that zebco used to sell they say. It was a tiny bumble bee pattern on a jig, and had a little sprig of red for the tail. They claim it was a killer on crappie. But they say it was real tiny and dropped real slow under a cork.
