I found this Danvise I am thinking about buying for $69.95.Is this a good buy?

Len, my second vise was a Danvise, and it's a decent vise. I would call it the upper-end model of the lower-end products, but that's just me. It will do what you need it to, but I would recommend you step up to a Griffin. But it also depends on what your purpose is. For general crappie jig tying, you don't need a complex vise; a cheap Master will suit your needs. But if you get into tying flies smaller than what- a size 8, you might look into a better vise. One thing I would recommend for your vise is a material clip that sits somewhere behind the jaws of the vise. It comes in handy for holding materials out of the way that had to be attached to the hook, but will not come into use until later. They are usually just a spring that is attached to the back of the vise.

I have that vise (or one very very similar to the one pictured), an ex-gf gave it to me in college a few years ago (along with some other really nice tying equip). I love it!!! As for tying smaller flies, I tie size 20 dries on it all the time. I am also doing a job for a guy at work with 2\0 wolley buggers, so for me it encompasses any and all sizes of hooks. the jaw adjustment is easy, and I am not sure about the materials holder, but am pretty sure mine came with one, but it is removable, and I do not use it.

That is what I use and like it just fine. That price is about right. I bought mine on eBay.

My first advice if you have access is to try out a fly shop and tie on as many different models of vise's as you can. A vise is like a car some like one some like another.

it's a very good article on many different vises in many different price ranges. I've tied on an old Herters vise, a sunrise brand, thompson Model A and my current vise is a Dyna-King Kingfisher, and for me I love it.

I use one and it does come with the spring for holding material. I wish the jaws stuck out just a little more but its no big deal once you get use to it.

The only negative thing have seen is some people break the jaws. It comes with a video that shows you how to set the jaw tension. If you follow that it is no trouble. The reason people break them is they adjust them too tight and then try to clamp a hook in there.
