Bass Pro has a video on saltwater fly tying. On it, Lefty Kreh gives a great demo of how to do the whip finish by hand. That alone is worth the price of the video.

Yep! I'm gonna watch him cast this Saturday. He's 83 and can cast the whole line like it's nothing.

Shoot I can't draw an ink blot but I can tie jigs that catch fish. Just watch a few of the on line tying videos and tie a few. It takes a while to catch on. but its not hard.
Also will put a smile on your face. When your catching crappie on them and the other guy in the boat is not. As he is using tub jigs. but did not take long to as to use on mine.

I took my brother in law Mike to go do some crappie fishing at Lower Otay Reservoir in San Diego California. I know we have some nice crappie in there and one of the most popular lures there is a Kalin's John Deere triple threat grub on 1/16 charetuse headed beetle spin. So a few nights before we went I tied a couple of jigs using Blakemore heads with the spinner on the underside. I tied them with charetuse and neon green maribou with a little bit of sparkle thread in them. I used just a basic green thread for the body. For those of you that fish the John Deere color we know that I have made nothing more than a jig with the same colors that I knew were succesful at the lake. Well after fishing for about two hours we got our first bite of the day and Mike had a hook up. I was excited to see that Mike was about to get a nice crappie like I had been telling him about for the last three days. Much to my surprize that crappie jumps out of the water and I realize it is not a nice crappie but something else. So after a few minutes Mike pulls in to the boat a very nice trout. This is the first trout that has been caught in my boat since I got the boat it in June of last year. So I have to say I was disappointed it was not the crappie I was looking for but I could not say how excited I was to see that the first fish of the day came on one of the jigs I tied. It turns out that this was the only fish we caught for the whole day. It was also the only one of my jigs that we had out, all other poles were rigged with grubs and jigs that I had bought and not made. Now I am looking for my first crappie on one of my jigs.

my great uncle has been tying for over 40 years....
i have learned alot from him but he mainly ties flies for trout and big dear hair popers for bass...
the 3 things we strongly agree on is a good vise is a must as cheaper ones wear out in a short time usually due to a novice fly tyer over tightening hooks in the vise

and a good bobin those 3 things will most likely turn a short term thing into a life long hobby

Hi Everyone,
I Am new here, and just wanted to say thanks for all the info on tying and catching. I read so much here before i had joined wow what a great place to learn. Living in Mims Fl, I manage to find a place real close called The Fly Fisherman Man they have a ton of stuff there and great people to help. I ended up buying a Renzetti Vice and all the tools i needed to start tying. Problem is, every time i go there i find so much more i think i need. It's a blast. The wife's off to bingo and i tie Jigs. And you all are so right it is so addicting.

I tie my own jigs and I make and mold my jigs. Do-It molds. You can find on the internet. Eagle claw hooks. I also Paint my jig heads, using powder paint. Been tying flys for more than forty years. I've tied flys down to 22 size hook. In a immersion Mosquito Pattern. Theres some great books you can buy in your local Fly Shop for beginner flyers. They will show you the right steps in tying flys and your jigs. Have Fun I do use a whip finisher on all my jigs up to 1/2 ox heads.. There easy to use after you get the hang of it. ( Jigs for Salmon and Steelhead. 1/2 oz )
