My first fly was tied with hair from my black lab on a size 8 nymph hook... it looked strange but it caught some bluegills.
Your proportions are right on- you don' want tails that are much longer than the length of the hook shank. It will catch some crappie.
Looks like it will catch fish. You may want to find some jigs without the lead collar, I think they are much easier to work with.
Don't worry about perfection..... I have had days fly fishing where my fly starts to come apart and looks pretty messed up with thread and material sticking out all over the place. Sometimes I think those flies catch MORE fish than the perfect ones. Keep it up!!

Pretty good for your first.Important thing is to have fun.You get a little better with each jig you tie and then,Wham!!!!!You catch a fish on something you made yourself.Then you are the one hooked. This is really a lot of fun.The learning curve is so much quicker on a site like this,I wish I'd found a site like cc when I first started tying,but back then I didn't even own a computer.
Not bad MaryLou, but just a little tip. Get your self some double edge razor blades as that is what all the fly tiers use to cut deer hair when shaping a fly that was done by spinning deer hair. So you can use the same thing to trim the extra length after it's tied, but just be careful not to cut your thread and mess the whole thing up. I have done that too.
I keep one of that kind of blades at my reach all the time and I use it to trim what sticks out at the head.
