It seems like every year I throw away a lot of good unused line off my reels. If the cap. for 4# is 200yds how full do you need to fill the spool to get the best casting performance for the reel, 1/2, 3/4 ?????????
I know what ya mean,This is how I keep from spending alot of money on good line, I will fill my spincast reels to the edge of the spool with a tiny lip showing. I will lose some of the line the first 2 or 3 times I cast until the reel starts to cast with-out the tangle and loops. What I do to keep from using so much line is to put 50 to 75 yds or so of 8# or 10# to fill the spool up some this way I dont need alot of my expensive line. Just tie the two lines togeather. I always leave the hevier line on the spool and just renew the line 2 couple times a year or when ever. Give that a try.
I agree, I generally fill my spool with some very inexpensive line about halfway, and then put the premium line on top to cut back on the amount needed. When you get down so you can see the knot after you cast, you know it is getting close to time to replace the premium line

Well guys this is just an idea for you but its what i have learned from some of my bass fishing buddies. Line can get expensive depending on what you use. Lots of people respool every trip to every couple of trips and you throw away alot of unused line. Ive been told to fill up the reel with line, then before the next time you go out pull of 25 to 30 yards or however much you would generally cast out, and cut it and use whats left on the reel, and just keep doing this till you get low, then you dont have to waste money and better than restringing. i also use as small of a ( black ) barrel swivel on the end of my line to keep it from getting line twist when i use my 12ft. rods flipping a slip bobber into cover

using mono fill the spool leaving about 1/8" of the spool exposed, forget floro on a spinning, and braid about 1/8" of the spool exposed.
With braid you can transfer old line to another spool and continue using.
Electrical tape is pretty inexpensive. Just fill about half the spool with it and then add line.![]()
fill mine 1/8 in from the edge.
