Who prefers plastic skirts opposed to feather, maribou or whatever, and why.
old newbie.... I have to say I prefer feathers to plastic at this point...but from my other post you will see I am trying to give plastics a shot. I believe good plastics are more easily available to most people. Good feather jigs are harder to come by in the big box stores...but if you make your own, or buy from some really good jig making folks like in the crappie forum here...you'll get some quality product. There is just more labor that goes into a good feather jig...and plastics/lead heads are just cheaper and easier to mass produce in my opinion and thus have wider use/exposure to the fishermen.
The advantages of plastic I believe are....they are cheaper, readily available, wide variety of styles, quick to change colors and styles without retying jig. Just my thoughts.

Old Newbie,
I am sure there are varying opinions on the feather or hair jig compared to plastics. I am a semi-pro fisherman and use plastic tubes about 99.9% of the time. Whether solid body or hollow body tubes, it is hard to go wrong with plastics.
Personally I think 2" is a good all around size, but many like 1-1/2", and it is probably the most common size.
I see a lot of folks on here talking about Bass Pro Shops tubes and plastics, but just keep in mind most of them are made in China!
I am a Southern Pro Pro-Staffer, and they are all made in Arkansas and 100% American Made in an American Plant using all American workers!
Here is a link to their website, but all in all I think Grizzly Jigs out of Missouri probably has the best selection of their product all the items they offer are not on the website but here is the link so you can check it out!

I only use hair jigs when the water temp is 45 or below. All other times I use Southern Pro tubes and the Storm minnows. I do a lot of verticle jigging around cover as you don't loose near as many jigs as you do casting.
i take spinner bait skirts and cut them up and use them for the tails on my hand tied jigs...better movement and dont have to worry about it pulling down...i use plastics and my jigs but perfer mine of plastic due the fact they have 3X more movement then plastic

I like the plastic tube jigs because I can take a Bait Pump and inject crappie nibbles inside of them...or I can take some of our own Crappie.com Slab Sauce or Liquid Minnow and squirt inside of them. It works great.![]()
