Met up with Lee this morning and after looking at the weather and water report, we decided a change of location was in order. Cataract had risen 2 feet from the rain in the past 24 hours, and the winds were blowing hard out of the SW, so we figured between those two factors plus all the pressure that lake has been receiving we'd head somewhere else. Somewhere else turned out to be Raccoon.
Pulled into the lot around 11:30 to find less than 10 vehicles, most all bass boats. Kind of rare but we were pleasantly surprised. Not sure I've seen that few at the State ramp there all year. Water was just 1 foot below pool and clear. Surface temps were hovering right around 56 degrees most of the day.
Ran a lot of stuff trying to stay out of the wind as much as possible. The lake was actually white-capping at times and it made boat control a chore. Calmer banks were much more manageable. Never did get on them good today. A couple here and a few there, never more than 4 on a spot. One interesting fact was that we only caught a single white crappie today. Out of the 28 we managed to get to the boat, 27 of them were blacks. Only had a dozen keepers today, but those blacks made up for their numbers with their thickness. Big fat backs on those things, plump as turkeys :D
As usual, found a few new spots for the GPS, learned a bit more about the lake, and had some great company, so you can't beat that no matter how tough the fishing. Here's Lee with a couple of those chunky critters from today.
Those are some nice blacks. Your turkey comment reminded me of last year at Thanksgiving, when I had to throw a couple of crappie in the oil after frying my Turkey, I think I may have started a new tradition.
I've never been on Racoon, but may have to try it this fall before I put my toon up.
You two are going to clean out these two lakes at the rate you are going! Good to see some nice ones coming out of Racoon. Last time I was there I could only catch the small ones. Lake should start dropping any day now and the fishing should pick up. Good to see Lee back in the boat again.
We had one heck of a spring on Raccoon this year. We started out only keeping 9" and above and by the end of the spring season we were not keeping anything below 10". We have watched the spring crappie fishing improve over the last three years on Raccoon. They say the crappie fishing there is cyclic, and in a couple more years it may be back to dinkville.
