Default mud motor???

Hey guys, do any of you use a mud motor? I just got a 12' jon to fish the small rivers and creeks around here and use for duck season. I was looking at the long tail style mud motors but they seem pricey. They are just briggs motors, universal joint, and long shaft. I am thinking about making one with a 5 horse briggs horizontal drive. Has anyone out there done this? Do they work decent here in the Hoosier state? Any input would be great.

let me see if I can dig up a few pictures for you. A couple of my buddies did this and it seemed to work okay. One of them now has a real go-devil and says it works great. So i'm not sure how well it worked but it did work, I had a ride or two in it during early season.

Here are a few bad pictures... If I can find the time, and find out where the motor is now. I may be able to get better pictures.

That’s great, thanks for the pics. I have a plan drawn up similar to a go-devil. They seem about as good as it gets. There are a couple things I am worried about though. First the bearings and shaft. Second would be the angle of the shaft. I know the prop has to be just barley under the water but I’m not sure at what angle it should sit to maximize performance. If you have any input I would love it.

try this. lol i think its called the scavenger. notice the shaft going under motor to a gear which is then connected via chain to the clutch. i dont think the angle is that important bro.

Thanks River. I have thought about the scavenger style. Do you know what type of gears they use? Is it a belt drive or chain drive? Does anyone out there use a mud motor and if so how well do you like it?
