I'm heading to bass pro over the weekend and planning on restocking the tackle box. I was hoping to get a discussion on what type of fishing line everyone likes. Thinking about trying something new.
When I am casting jigs around brush and standing timber which is what I like to do in the spring, I have mainly used Fireline smoke color 6 lb test. I have been using it for years. You can't hardly break it. You can fish all day, get snagged 25 times and usually bend the hook to get undone. A couple of draw backs is if you are snagged and you don't put on some kind of glove the line will cut your hand as you pull it off. Another issue is you can't really see the line to well as you jig sinks.
Of course we also do a lot of vertical jigging with 11 foot poles. I started using Fireline 6 lb in the green/neon color. I like it because you can see the line and detect bites on the fall. I just wonder if the fish can see this line and its preventing some bites.
Any thoughts, advise or comments are appreciated
Brian, I was wondering the same thing, I have been using Trilene products, used to not have any problems, but last few spools I got, I have had trouble with the line unspooling on the reel. Thought about trying the fireline.
i use to recommend mr. crappie. but they have ruined the line. it is made in tawain now and is terrible. it has tons of memory and will not stay on the spool. i am buying some gamma to try right now. i have heard that it is great. they have a money back warranty. i just ordered 3 spools. 1-4#, 1- 6#, 1- 8#. i will report on it after i try it.
I have been using YoZuri hybrid.. just had it laying around from my walleye rods... super strong, but I can't see it... gonna get some vicious hi-vis to try out along side the flouro coated to give it a shot.
Three years ago I decided to change over from Berkley and Stren mono and braid to other makes. By the end of last summer, guess what, back on Stren products and even quit using Berkley. Nothing was really better than the Stren I had been using, and Berkley does not offer the Hi-Vis yellow or gold that I like. Hurts thinking of the dollars I tossed with all those lines that got tossed- especially the braids.![]()
P-Line or Sufix.
stren original
I use mr crappie and have not had any problems with it
can't catch'em at home
Me and dad use nothing but stren... we use 6lb on ultralights and 10 on jig poles....Always use the clear or clear blue....Switched to the superknot end of last year and it seems to hold a knot better than anything we've used, and best you can get it at wally world.....
Just another Crappie day!
I dont know if there is one BEST line. Ive used most of them over the years, Ive always liked Triline XL for casting jigs, P-line floro for jiging or long polling, but if your going to BPS I found some line in the bargin box in one of the asiles one day I think it was called Sportsmans choice camo line 6#. I really like that line and it was cheap as far as lines go. Lots to pick from. Good luck.
