This is my first post.
Thanks everyone for the great information on the site. I hope to contribute to the knowledge
Sorry I am a little late putting this report in. I only had 2 hours to fish, but I caught 9 Crappie around 9.5" each. It was my first time to fish Horseshoe lake. I had to weed through the drum to get the nine crappie....... about 2 drum to one crappie.
I just moved to the St. Louis area from the Chicago area and the crappie fishing is much better in this area. So I plan to get out more.
Lime Green jig did the trick!
Welcome to the site and thats some nice lookin crappie.

That is the Horseshoe by the St. Louis area near Granit City. I guess I didn't know there was another Horseshoe around here. I found the horseshoe by St. Louis while dove hunting in September. I made a trip to Rend Lake for Dove as well. I wish I would have kown how good the crappie fishing was over there. I would have stopped Dove hunting and went after the crappie. Because there wasn't a single dove flying.
Hey montanaBoy, welcome to the site and a couple nice looking fish to start you off!

Welcome to the site montana boy I sure you will like it. Nice fish
can't catch'em at home
Welcome to the site...nice catch. I may be wrong but I think there is a major consumption advisory on that lake. Somewhere...i think on here.....i picked that up awhile back. Again, I may be wrong, but I know there was some discussion regarding a lake in that area and the contiaminants in it...i think it was horseshoe. Someone correct me if Im wrong.
Just FYI, here is a post by a fellow member (johnz) regarding the fish in this lake.
QUOTE "If it is the one by granite city, then do a search for pollutiants in that lake and you will bring up some very interesting things about that lake,( dont eat the fish]!!!!!!!!!But for a lake to go and just fish i will say for a fact that there are good 12/13in fish in that lake to be caught for fun only. And large # of them also. The bass sizes are very good to.Here is part of the article:
Our study of the sediment of Horseshoe Lake shows clear effects of human disturbance.
The lake appears to have become contaminated with sewage in the 1920's. An increase in calcium in the sediment suggests that eutrophication of the lake caused increased biogenic precipitation of calcium carbonate. However, sediment phosphorus and biogenic
silica, two other potential indicators of eutrophication did not increase. In the 1940's,
Horseshoe Lake became significantly contaminated by heavy metals. Although the section of the American Bottoms that contains Horseshoe Lake has lost much of its industrial ase in recent years, Horseshoe Lake still contains significant contamination. Our
work is consistent with Colten's (1988) reconstruction of industrial contamination of
American Bottoms ecosystems. Thus, Horseshoe Lake contains a physical record of the
industrial pollution that Colten described using historical documents.)"QUOTE
