Default Not really a crappie question

What's the best closed face reel out there? I've used Zebco's and Shakespeares and they all end up "catching" when casting. I don't know why the string is getting caught up inside them. Even after restringing they will do this. I use mostly open face reels but I'm wanting to get a good closed face for my Grandson to use. He's 7 and I know I could just buy a kids Zebco combo etc. But I want to get him something that won't frustrate him while casting. Any ides? Thanks guys. And to keep it crappie related, I'm going to get in touch with Nick at some point to meet up with him to take me and a friend out on Rend to slay some slabs.

The new authentic zen of 33 is supposed to be improved over the old reels. One of our members posted about buying one a year or so ago for his Grandaughter. He said it was much better. They also have one called the omega but it's more than I would spend on a Baitcasters. One of the secrets is using a good quality limp line. I always had good luck redpolls get with original clear blue strength. Another thing you can do is if it sits up much, before fishing, tie line off to something and let off 20/30 yards of line lock it down and pull on line to kind of stretch it. That will take a lot of the kink out of it.

Those old original Zebcos were great reels back in the 50s and 60s. Find one of those and go thru it. You don't have to be a reel pro to fix what might be wrong.

I had a Johnson Century when I was a teenager. Good ideas all.
