    Hi,

I am still waiting to hear back from my insurance agent....I think I will get the value for what the boat is in the boat book {nada?}...Hopefully, the insurance will give me a chance to purchase the boat back for a couple hundred dollars.....I am going to be keepin the engine for sure..Because, I have a lot of money into and it runs really good...

If I do get to keep the boat?...I will let you know..It is a 16ft bass tracker..

I would never buy a narrow Jon boat or one that was not deep enough. Some Jons are death traps that turn over very easily.

I have a 40+ year old Ouhita 16" Jon. The sorriest looking boat on the lake. I love it, it gets the job done and I don't have to worry about tearing it up. I catch a lot more fish than almost any of the guys gunning the $30,000 bass boats up and down the lake. My boat is paid for and while they are out working to make their payments, I am out catching fish. Nuff said.

Redtick- your also retired and are still getting checks each month for being retired while doing nothing. Its just a choice some people make as to what boat they want. While your boat may be perfect for lake mattoon...what happens on shelbyville where the lake is wider and rougher? Or if they want to go to other lakes...perhaps up north (canada) where waves are 4ft plus? Just all depends on what ya want and how much money ya wanna spend and what ur needs in a boat are!

p.s. most of them guys will 30,000 dollar boats are green carp fisherman and arent fishin for anything other than bass...which might be the reason why you catch more crappies and cats than them :D lol

I would rather fish out of a $30,000 boat, owned by someone else, than a jon boat owned by me.:D

This could be a double post, as I seem to have lost the first one! Short and sweet to Birdman...pensions are earned...they are not a check for doing nothing! They are almost always taxable and Ole Redtick probably owns or rents a house, which in turn is taxed and helps pay for Lakeland and possibly your primary schooling, depending on your location to him. So if Ole Redtick is getting a check for doing nothing, you are pretty much getting an education for next to nothing! Not trying to make you mad...just trying to educate you. Pensions are not welfare and his tax dollars may be benefitting you! Are you on Scholarship, receiving grants or low interest education loans, if you are thank Ole Redtick... and all the other tax payers...cause you are getting something for doing nothing!

webi your like our online teacher on here! I wasnt trying to pick a fight, be mean, or ignorant. All i was saying is he is getting money while not working. Nto that he never worked or didnt earn it, because geesh if I knew how to get money my whole life without workin by golly I would!!! So would everyone else lol. I have many items that are taxed as well, So i too am paying for college. Yes im on scholarship, but I worked 13 years to earn that scholarship too!!! No matter what anybody says there is going to be opinions took in different ways and thats what makes life...life. No hard feelings to anyone. This is just some good ol informative chat! Now back to johnny boats!

Birdy, I paid into a pension plan for 30 years. It paid off. I was lucky, it was a Union ran pension plan. A lot of the folks that paid into a corporation ran pension plans have often got ripped off. The CEO got their pension and bought a house in Bermuda.

I was also wise enough to not get trapped into a mortgage. I always paid as I went and I don't have to pay to live where I live, it is paid for. And, because I was wise and took advantage of certain situations, I don't have to pay much for taxes to live there. So, I could now afford to pay cash for a new bass boat if I thought I needed one. I don't. I will just keep the money and draw interest. LOL.

Seeeing how this thread is about Jon boats, not life experiances, my Jon works fine at Shelbyville but I don't push my luck on extremely windy days. My main reason for owning it is that I can easily get places other guys can not. Steve Welch could testify that can pay off crappie fishing, especially tournament time. He does fish out of a bass boat but he has it rigged to go places others can't go. That is a fact. In my Jon, I don't worry about a dent that might sink a plastic boat. It is deep, wide, and fairly safe. It is perfect for me. Nuff said.

Birdman, All I was saying... was that if Redtick had accepted more money on his wage package rather than sending that same money to his pension retirement plan; he could have...if disciplined enough put it in a savings account (Back when he was a yungan there were not IRAs or 401K's etc.) and not touch it! He then would have been able to take the money out without getting a check for doing nothing. I, like Redtick, am a firm believer in saving for that Rainy (fishing) day. My oppinion of your statement was that it was a negative statement...could you have expresed it as a staterment that could not have easily been taken negatively? Something like...Redtick I am very happy that you get retirement checks from your wise investment in a pension and hope my investments for retirement turn out as well. I'd like to have my retirement as leisurely as yours,...then make your point about what people want and need.

Lots of yungans today do not realize what a retirement plan is all about. I believe...Knowing Redtick was a laborer (probably in a Union) he was forced by contract into the defined pension plan, he probably did not have a choice. Today those defined plans are few and far between. A yungan like you must realize that it is imperative for you to have a good plan and stick to it It is now more of a choice of self funding, rather than working at a place that provides you a good retirement check in leu of more money on the check!

Maybe I misunderstood you, or maybe you choose words that were not positive towards Redtick, in either case...he does not get a check for doing nothing...he has earned a mothly check on his investment, to use any way he sees fit, in his retirement.
I most likely will not be able to teach you(or anyone else) much on crappiefishing, but I hope you will continue to enlighten me, as I try to listen to what you say.

I will later post how correct I believe Redtick was on small Jons, personal experience last year on a strip mine lake! See my earlier post on this thread of a guy I know wanting a junk boat...something stable!
