    Default HorseShoe report 10/29/09

My 10 yr old son had the day off from school so I took the day off from work. I planned to fish all day with him but the rain messed that up. We got to the Lake at 7:00 AM. We fished from shore using bobby Garland "baby shad" Key lime pie and sliver flake / Lime green tube jigs 9ft down. Fished the 1st spot for about 20 minutes and nothing so I moved to my second spot. First cast pulled in an 11.5 inch crappie. Went to get my son to have him come over. When I got to him is line was tangled really bad. So I gave him my pole and started working on his. Took me about 20 minutes to get the tangle out and another 10 to re-rig my slip cork setup. While working on his pole he broke mine off on the bottom and then it had a tangle.

He is new to slip corking that deep so it was a learning experience for him. After another 15 minutes I finally had my pole in the water again. I caught another 11" crappie and had one about 11" come off on the way in. Then everything was smaller after that. Lots of 9.5 " inchers and smaller. I am pretty sure the big ones were in there eating while I was fixing poles. It had me frustrated then I remembered when I take my son there is always going to be some extra tangles and break offs that need to be dealt with. I was trying to teach my boy how to read his cork cause they were hitting it really light. Finally he hooked up and got his 1st crappie that deep on a slip cork rig. He managed another crappie later on. That made all the tangles worth it. Too bad they were dinks. But one was a black crappie and the only black we caught that day. I probably caught 20 more from 8:00AM to 9:45AM. I decided to move to a different spot and I bumped into "CrappieKillerJigs" Keith. He was hooked up right when I got to him and pulling in a nice slab 12.75". So we talked a bit and then fished together for about the first 10 minutes I caught a few more all smaller fish. Then the rain came and they completely shut off. I went and tried shallow water and nothing there either. Called it a day.

I had 6 fish in the basket 4 that were close to 10" and 2 that were well over 10". Keith had about 6 five were close to 10" and the one nice slab. Kieth Kindly gave me his fish. So that made for a nice mess to clean and eat. It was a fun day I wish the rain would have held off longer.

Good looking fish.. Always nice when you get to take your boy out to enjoy with you.. I know my boy loves it, even if you have to dodge a few hooks and gets a few extra snags unhooked. I wanted to get out there this week but didnt get the chance. Guess i'm gonna have to buy my duck stamps so I can sit in the blind and crappie fish.. Ron at the bait shop says they pull some big ole slabs out from them blinds while waitin for the ducks to roll in..

When you go fish from the bank and you can catch a mess like that, I would say it is a very good day, Congrats to both of you.

Nice group of fish. It doesn't get better than fishing with your kids. They will remember that for the rest of their life. Great job!
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.
