Crab 8/23/09
Got out this afternoon and enjoyed the great weather. I kept 28 between 9.5 and 13 inches. Caught them all on minnows set at 7 feet. Quite a few little ones thrown back...not much action until 5 and then in was one after the other. Might have been more related to fishing bad spots rather than the time of day...time of day never really matters much at Crab if you locate the right area. Also, when I got home this little green snake was on the back of my boat...im not a snake expert...anyone know what kind it is? Its only about 10 inches long and thin as a pencil. Anyway, good fishin and hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the mild temps.

not sure what the kind of snake it is, but I think they are some kind of tree snake thats where I have always seen them

Good job!
Have you ever fished A-41 (off of Grassy Road and South WOlf Creek Road) or whatever its called on the south side of Crab?? I use to fish there back in the 70's and it was great until the rest of the students found it...

Yeah..i was a big A-41 guy in the late 80's. I'd hit the 21 inch pond at the refuge center and then hit A-41. I cannot recall catching any crappie from either one. I waded and fished for bass. Beautiful lake back then...havent been back there in probably 15 years.

You got me beat as I haven't been back since I graduated in 1980! I too waded and fished for Bass and I do not recall any size restrictions back then but then again I was a student and knew no better...

It was 15 inches in A-41. I dont think I ever really caught a hawg out of there but caught several bass. It had some really nice gills. The refuge pond had a 21 inch limit and it had plenty of fish in it that were legal. It was the best bass lake I ever fished when it first opened to the public....it took about a year and it was much harder. True story though....somehow I got wind of that lake being back there before it was open. I had no clue it was off limits. I drove out there and parked and walked back there with 1 rod and a little tackle box. I caught bass on ever single cast up to 6 pounds. Anyway, on the way out I got nailed by the DOC police. I didnt have any fish..and he let me go after running my license and a warning. Many nights on the full moon I had to hold myself back from sneaking in there (ok maybe I cheated once or twice). It was a phenominal place until the public got ahold of it.

Very true. Very True!
I found it with some student friends in 1978. In 1980 I took a couple of friends there and from what I hear it just blew wide open after that! I (almost) felt responsible for its downfall...almost.
If you walked that road back to where there is water on both sides of you that ends in a gate to the ammo bunkers - whoops, not suppose to know about those on the restrictive area, never mind - and you go to the main water on the left, I caught two five-pound bass there on purple tube worms and have never bested that accomplishement...Yet!!!
Anyway, hope to someday get down there and fish on Crab but my passion has been waterfowl since 1980. Went with Gary and Allen McCree around the early 1990's and hunted geese on the open water by Cambria Point and cat-a-corner from the marina. We were in a cove on the northwest side and I was blown away by their calling and putting the geese right in the decoys in front of me!
Those ALL were the days. Now I am happy to have friends across the state and chase waterfowl and now fish again. Just got done cleaning yesterday's fish from Shelbyville (they were on ice) and while not as many as we hoped it will be enough for a nice fry!
Again, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

Nice catch Jeff great mess of fish.
As far as the snake, it is a grass snake. They are really plasit snakes and are not aggresive at all. Very good snakes for pets if you have kids that like snakes. Feed them crickets and they make really good pets. My boys and I catch several of those every year. Gotta love them snakes.
