Default crab orchard 8-24-08

Kept 31 today. Absolutely no wind at all...not even a breeze. The fish are acting strange. 3 of us took 93 fish 2 weeks ago off 2 spots. Today those 2 spots produced 7 fish total. These spots have fish on them every day all year and have for 20 years but they have vacated lately. For some reason there is a current flowing west to east that was not there 3 weeks ago. Both of these spots are getting the brunt of this current right now so I think they have left because of this. So i went to another location behind an island that was out of the current and picked up the bulk of them. I do not understand how such a current can come up in the absense of high water or a good rain. Plus the current is flowing away from the dam. I've seen this before but its strange. Anyway..here is the picture.

Nice catch ...

how are you measuring the current below the surface? Rather a change in current you might have experienced localized runoff. The west end of the lake and it's drainage basin picked up more than an inch of rain while very little fell over most of the rest of the area of the lake ... so the lake was rising (slightly) from the west, not from the normal drainage in from the channels to the east. Something interesting to watch in future events.

Haha...i know Frank. Im spoiled I guess. But I do realize that in some lakes in the state its hard to catch a half dozen which makes me thankful to have some great lakes to fish. Birdman...these fish run typically 9 to 11 inches which is perfect for eating. I throw back everything under 9 and usually everything over 13. I call em "crab orchard keepers". There are usually a few 12s in there and once in awhile youll get a 14 or 15 but not that often.

that is weird that there was a west to east current. It could be irrigation causing the backflow...... if DNR or the farmers are pulling water from the creeks or rivers that feed into the lake that could cause it.
