    Default Mossberg 243 Question

Anybody had any dealings with the Mossberg Maverick .243? I am looking to buy a .243 to have when I take kids hunting. I want a good gun but does not have to be top of the line. I figure most of their shooting will be done at 100 yards and closer.

If anyone has other suggestions that would be great also.

.243 is one of the best deer rounds I've ever used. Shoulder shots drop them on the spot. I'd use 100 gr. bullets. Don't know much about that model but Mossburg has bin around a long time.

.243s are very popular round here. We have smaller deer than up north, I shoot a Remington 80 grain hollow point, only way they go is down. High lung shots is where it's at.

I suggest a Remington model 700. You can pick one up at Walmart for less than $400 and it has a cheap scope on it. I would opt for the Remington over the Mossburg. The Remington will be blued with a black stock. Should be a decent gun.

If you want to sink a few more $'s in it you can go with a Thompson Center Venture. I just bought one back in January in 270. It is the best shooting gun that I own and I have a Remington BLD SS DBM in 25-06 that shoots less than half inch groups at 100 yards. I paid $443 for the Venture and it is worth every penny.

My buddy has a Mossburg in 270 and it shoots well but if just feels cheap.

    Just my opinion.

My son has a Remington 243, real good gun, he killed a big 8 point at 130 yards ,one shoot dropped him in his tracks( when he was 8 years old). Shot a good 6 point at about 150 yards, shot it a little low, but it only went about a 100 yards in the woods and fell dead( he was 9) now this year he will be 10 and I can't wait to see what he gets this year.

Never had any dealings with the Mossberg, but we have 2 of the Savage .243 bolt action rifles, shooting ballistic silvertips 95g. Very accurate guns, 3 shot group at 100 yrds can cover with a nickel.

I was looking at a Remington 700 as well. Found one with camo stock and stainless barrell for $349. I will put my hands on a few of these guns before I purchase.

    Thanks for the input guys!

I just sold a Rossi matched pair .243/20 gauge. My kids have outgrown it. The Rossi is cheap, but is a tack driver! Very well built little single shot.

Jump on the Remington with a camo stock and stainless barrel for $ 349.00. Look it over and make sure nothing is messed up.

    That sounds like a steal.
