My first rifle was a Winchester 94 in 30-30...It is wearing a Williams receiver sight, and white bead. Still in my safe today. I have owned and enjoyed many Marlins thru the years. This one I call "Thumper"...a 444....my all time favorite

VERY nice shape! A 30-30 is about as perfect as brush gun made, for down here in the swamps. Ranges are real close, and the lever action, is short and follow up shots are quick. Load em down for plinking and small stuff. They are very versatile, and most shoot lead bullets well. Reload friendly.
I have an old Sears, Model 45, 30/30. JC Higgins (Marlin) that's very similar to yours. Wouldn't get rid of it for anything....

seen lots of firearms and owned quite few myself brother , I had a Belgium made browning saddle gun in a 308 for a long time as well . but one thing for certain I wont miss her much or the old marlin as both went on to places that helped out my family and both remain in my memory as weapons to get the job done .

Yep! Keeping it in the family is a good thing. Funny... I say I wouldnt get rid of it, but actually, I tried to locate the relatives, of the fellow I bought it from, in the 70's.
I was going to see if they wanted it, to pass down. I aquired it when a fellow carpenter, was having money problems, and rejected his offer to buy it back, a couple of years later. After I got my mind right, I never felt at ease about it. No luck finding the kin though.....it came out of the hills in Viriginia, and had been a gift from his wife.
Over 45 deer down with that rifle, before I got it....

Now Ketchn don't go stretchin things out about PA huntin camps. lol
This was my 70th season hunting there, starting at age 12 in 1947.
I'm still very involved in a family owned camp in Cameron Co. in the n/c part of the state.
My first rifle was also a Win. 94 30/30, but not for long, as i soon had a Rem 141 pump in 35 Rem.
Although the Marlin was popular there, not nearly as much as the Win 94, or even the 99 Savage.
I believe they are actually appreciated today more than then.
The one i kick myself for not buying back then was the 39a 22 rimfire.

I did have a model 94 for a very short time , but I didn't like it for 2 reasons , very stiff lever and it only took one shell down the back of my shirt for me to know why it wasn't for me ...lol
that coupled with a difficult scope mount program and I wanted scope ,made me trade it off with grandpa for the ole marlin . but to be sure there were lots of lever actions in the old gun cabinet in them pa. hunt camps of all varieties ,savages were popular as I remember also .
lots of times when it was morning up there half the man didn't wake up or "couldn't" and I was often hunting with just one other in the snow .... I sure remember that cold in the snow right well . feel thru an iced over river one time at 8 degrees and about froze to death it seemed to me by the time I got back to camp ....
BRRRRR .....my boots was froze so stiff when I got there I had to sit in front of the fire place for what seemed like a million years at the time to get them off .... LOL

For sure the Marlins with the side ejecting were more scope friendly.
But there were also very few scopes being used back then, and even less seen on those type guns.
The safety aspect with any of those type guns with regard to people unloading them was always a concern.
