Default First deer hunt in 30 plus years.

Well, found out a new friend has 300 acres and wrangled an invite. Just had hopes of getting a young doe to make some pattie sausage and ground meat. Plus do something special with the tenderloin. Had a nice box stand. He dropped me off at 2 pm. At 3:30 a turkey appeared. Within 5 minutes I counted 42. About 4 they were 75 yards away. Knew it probably was not a good idea, but could not resist a pic. As you see in the second pic they became shy. Figured no chance of seeing a deer after that, but I never seen so many turkey's, and was pleased with that. Low and behold about 20 minutes later a couple does came out across the field I was watching. Out of range but exciting. 5 minutes later one stepped out about 90 yards away. I made the decision that yes I would take her, since I talked about it before hand. Using a 35 caliber Marlin, shooting Remington 200 grain, I cocked and put her in sight. At that time another stepped out next to her. i waited for them to settle and decided on the second. She went cross ways and bent her head down. A perfect target. I lined up and squeezed. She raised her head and shook it then turned and walked in the woods. I cocked and was lining up on the other when she ran in the woods. They were only 5 feet from the edge. I gave it a little time and walked down to look. Found no trace of blood, hair or deer. At least I can say I only missed one in 30 plus years. hahaha. Anyway, loved it and now with permission I plan on going at least twice more this week. Also, plan on buying into the lease next year and getting fully into it. I had a blast. Thanks Max.

SIL checked it and said it was on at 100 yards. I'm gonna shoot it some in the next couple days. If it gets up from the single digits we supposed to get. Also, will probably buy a 30-06 or 308 next year if I stick with it. For longer shots.

The 308 will take you out as far as you want to ethically harvest an animal. Waiting for our temps to warm up also. Got several boxes of reloads dying to be shot.

Your better off to sight the scope in for your eyes and not someone else sighting in for you. Yeppers, shoot it before you hunt.

The 308 not only has less recoil, and shoots long range, if you decide to reload or have a buddy reload for ya,the 308 will save you money on powder.

I used to use a 308 but I only use a 30 06 now and have 2 of them . both weapons work well but I settled in on the 06 because I like the bark ...lol
sorry you missed your opportunity but a little range work in the off season will help that and of course some more time in the woods .
and Yes there is such a thing as doe fever , been there and done that myself ....nice read
