Hello All,

HOI Crappie Club held our Single Pole Challenge. It was an open tournament held on Dawson Lake on June 17th 2017. As expected it got hot, however the cloud cover helped keep it cooler on the water. The wind made boat control a challenge for even the most experienced. Most teams kept moving, either trolling, pulling cranks, or moving from one spot to the next frequently. I didn’t notice any teams anchored up for more than a 1/2hr. We ended up with 15 competitors from young to old. Turned out the youth showed up in-force and did an outstanding job on the water. We had an unusual twist on the big fish competition, open to all species. I heard a bunch of the one-that-got-away at the ramp. I too had my own big fish that self-released at the boat.

My day was filled with bluegill, lots and lots of bluegill. Which is normally great, however this was a Crappie tournament. Needless to say, I didn’t weigh a Crappie and figured a bluegill wasn’t going to do it for open species big fish tournament. I was right. Turns out a Catfish won the big fish tournament. Jed’s cat weighed 1 lb. 3.1 ounces and beat out several other species for the Big Fish Win.

1st-4th place went to our younger competitors. It was stiff competition. Less than ½ ounce separated 1st through 4th place. The smiles on their faces was priceless. Unfortunately only the top three lined up for the winners photo. I would like to congratulate our winners in order 1st through 4th place. We paid out to the top 3 places. The kids were excited and I think they had a great time. I had just as much fun watching them win and the excitement on their faces was priceless.
