Smile Chattahoochee River / South of Columbus

Saturday, April 18 south of Columbus, GA. Brrr it was rather cool that morning.

Friend of mine took me on the river. The "hooch" is a beautiful place. The fog was lifting off of the water. Spanish moss, blue herron, and what could have been - our very own 10-foot alligator. But we have enough pets, so I left him alone.

Alligators are a wonderful deterrent to "lake lice". This was one of the quietest, most peaceful places I've ever been. My first time on the river...it won't be my last.

I don't know yet how many were left in the ice chest after he gave me 11-crappie and 2-bream. He kept the 10 or so remaining crappie and four catfish. Two of those catfish were in the 3-4 pound range. Surprised at not snagging a bass or two by accident.

Fished minnows and late in the day when they got turned on, I used a silver-white minnow looking jig that had a red dot on it. It was that jig that snagged the 1-1/2 or so crappie in the picture. It was so much fun. My float had just landed next to the brush pile and it faded out of sight.

This was my first serious, all day crappie fishing trip in more years than I can count.

I see what you guys are talking about. After a day of fishing like this, I think work is way overrated!!

Only half the fish I cleaned had eggs. And then, just a couple "sacks". Not very full at all. Either we had several males or they've just about finished in this body of water.

I love to see that float go under when crappie fishing with a jig.
It took a long time for me to be convinced that they'd hit it with the jig just sitting there under a cork, but now I believe they take it deeper and stay hooked better with that hair jig instead of the plastics (when using a float).
There used to be a group of guys down that way that fished over on the river near Louvale (below Cusseta) and they'd make these huge scores using Doll Flys with the corks and people just wouldnt believe them. (I was one of the skeptics)
I look back now and think of all the fish I missed out on by being hard headed.

Default Mr. Doug Bush, where have you been?

Where have you been my friend? You have been dearly missed on this board. Have you fished the Hooch or Stone Mountain lately? It is so good to have you posting on the board again. Hope to read another post from you soon.

    Hello Mister Hawk
It has been a tough spring(?) so far at Stone Mountain. Been getting 15-20 a day on the crappies but thats putting in a HARD 8 hours of chunking and winding. I am going over there in the morning and will post results.
I smelled out a bream bed over there the other day and its been in that same spot for at least 2 weeks. I will throw some worms all over that little cove tomorrow.
Havent been up to the hooch yet. First week in May usually is when it starts exploding there. We shall see.
    Regards,
    Douglas
