My last few fishing trips have not produced many fish at all. I know that there is some of you out there who are catching a lot, but the luck is just not there for me recently.

Dad and I went the other day and decided we would try for some bream. I knew that I had plenty of crickets and I had one box of worms from the day before. We got to an area that we thought would hold some bream and started catching shellcracker.

We were catching a few on the crickets and when we went to get the worms, we found that all of them were dead. I think that the heat got to them.

I have known how to care for worms, but I guess that my mind went blank as it usually does. Usually I put them in the house where they won't get too hot but this time I left them in the boat overnight. I feel that if we had had some good worms we could have caught a lot more because worms are the shellcrackers’ choice of food.

A long time ago I decided to go fishing one day for shellcrackers. I was alone and when I left my house I noticed a couple out on a walk. I recognized who they were and stopped to ask Mr. Harvey Mixon if he would like to go fishing with me. I met him at his house and then we were on our way.

Luck must have been on our side because not long after we started to fish, we found a large bed of shellcrackers. I think we ended up with over 60 nice shellcracker.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip with Mr. Mixon and I feel that he also enjoyed it. The reason that I am telling you about this trip is because the LORD called Mr. Mixon home the other day. I want to tell the Mixon family that he is definitely home with the LORD and that he is in no pain. Thank you, Mr. Mixon, for that very memorable fishing trip.

I will always be committed to my dad and especially to carrying him fishing. Please everbody, spend some quality time with your loved ones because you never know when they won't be around.

I have found out that some of the bream are bedding now, so please try and find the time to show your kid a fun day of fishing.

May your catch be large and plentiful and may GOD bless you all.

Crappie.com a big hit with angling columnist

Have you ever had a day of fishing when you only caught 12 crappie and still thoroughly enjoyed the day?

I’ve been fishing several times and not had that much luck and felt miserable but this past Saturday that was the total landed by my wife and we still had a ball.

Last December, I joined a fishing group on the internet — Crappie.com — not thinking there would be much to it but boy have I been fooled. Every so often, members get together and have a friendly crappie tournament.

After the weigh in is over, you’d expect everybody to go home but not this bunch. Most everybody sticks around and cleans the crappie that are caught and then have what I would call a good ol’ fashion fish fry.

I am so impressed with the fellowship within this group. One of the things I think is special about this group is that families are welcome, especially the kids.

Everyone that is a member of Crappie.com has web names such as Papa Sage, Rag Fly Jig Man (that’s me, by the way), Falcon Smitty, Reelcrappie, Trumpdriver, Stump Hanger, Birddog and several others.

If you love the sport of fishing and fellowship just go to Crappie.com on the internet and join in. It’s totally free. I think you’ll love it.

At the tourney this past Saturday, the crappie were not biting that good but I still had fun. The wife and I started fishing at 6:30 a.m. and on my third cast I hooked a monster slab crappie. It’s bad when you lose a fish but it’s really terrible when you lose a monster slab AFTER you have eye balled him.

That’s right, as soon as he got to the top of the water he broke my line. I estimated he would have gone well over two pounds. My wife was a witness and I know she won't lie.

Overall, the crappie bite continues to be slow but it does seem to be picking up a bit. Hopefully dad and I will be able to try our luck before the week is out. I think I’m going to try for some bluegills, too. I’ll let you know how we do.

While the fishing may be slow now, anytime is still a great time to show a kid a fun day of fishing on the lake so let me encourage you to do just that.

Until next time, may your catch be large and plentiful and may God bless you all.
