My son and I went to the hill today. We started out fishing really shallow with just minimul luck. I think we caught about 6 in 6' of water or less. Then we went to some structure in 10' of water. Caught a few there. Finally we started fishing 20' deep in 25' of water. That is where we had our best luck. that's also where we caught 4 fish from 1lb 8oz to 1lb 10oz. We ended up keeping 20 crappie and one striper. The shallow fish were caught on curly tail grubs, and the deep ones were caught on jiffy jigs tipped with minnows. The water temp started out at 68 degrees this morning and was at 72 by the time we left. Not sure what it means, but 2 of the fish we caught still had eggs in them. ???? thought they would have been done by now.
To heck with work, lets go fishing.
Good day. Did it with that used up old boat too. I really enjoy seeing pictures of your son, I know he has to be a joy to you and your wife. I think that there are still some crappie that are spawning and that the ones that spawned first are in deeper water and headed into the summer pattern.
Nice looking slabs! I was at Clarks Hill for the first time last month, and caught my biggest crappie ever. Hope to get down there next spring also.
Caught my biggest ever crappie there 4-21-07. 19.75 inches, 3 lbs 4 oz. I love to fish near the mouth of the broad river.
What kind of scale??? I caught a 19 1/2" slab that was heavier than that one. Mine was a winter(2/16) catch when they are gourging prespawn. Yours must have laid or has been protecting the eggs. I would bet last month it was several ounces heavier..Originally Posted by GASlabman
But congrats on that monster I know you were proud and excitied!
score,,, I was suprised to find fish still spawning yesterday on a lake I was catching spawning fish 6 weeks ago. The weather has really prolonged things this year. Shooting docks is how I stumble on them so I targeted spawning areas on that side of the lake.
