Me and my Dad and Brother went fishing Friday and Saturday out of Steinhatchee, and had 2 great days.
Friday we caught 26 sea bass, 2 Spanish mackerals, 3 specks, 1 kingfish and 2 gag grouper, 1 15lbs and 1 10lbs.
The grouper and king were caught trolling stretch 30's in 40 ft of water.
Saturday me and Dad went flat fishing for trout and caught 43 sand trout (with 2 of the largest sand trout we had ever seen 1 was 161/2 in. and the other was 15 in. which is gigantic for a fish that 12 in is considered big.),
and 5 specks.
To rough to go out today, heading back out tomorrow and Tuesday.
My grandpap told me growing up..."Son, God doesn't deduct time from your life, spent fishing"
nice fish!
How are you fishing for those sand trout? Same as the speckled trout? What depth of water on the flats? Nice catch. You definitely have some good eating there.
Great catch! Maybe next time it could be you and your Dad and Brother,...and oprystar and his wife! LOL Just kidding of course! Thanks for the posting the pics.
Good lick! Was suppose to have went the first of april but work made me cancelGood to see somebody catching some.
Nice mess of fish. How far out did you have to go out to pick up the grouper? What kind of depths did you pick the sand trout up in? We fish a lot out of Keaton and pick up a few sand trout but I've never gotten into a large group of them.
Apparently in the fall, the large sand trout come onto the flats. We were down there in October, and we caught huge numbers of sand trout tossing bass assassins just like we do for specks. Many of these were 15+". I thought it was incredible, but a couple of the local guides told me it happens for a few days every year around this time, and that the local folks load up on them for those few days.
If you haven't been down there, folks, it can be a great place to fish. We've caught well over 150 trout/day in water 2-6 ft deep, all on plastics.

I would appreciate any advice on where to go, stay, etc for a good flats trip. I live in Middle GA and mostly crappie fish out of a 17' Carolina Skiff w/60 hp motor. I did some flats fishing around Cedar Keys, Carrabelle, Horseshoe Beach back when I was a kid but was only paying attention to the fishing and not the how to get there part. I keep hearing about Steinhatchee but kinda hesitant about pulling the boat down there and being effective the first time. Maybe I should look at going out with a guide to learn where to go and what to look out for.....safety first. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
nice catch dutch i see a great supper in the near future thank for the pics.
Got crappie?:D
Mmm Mmm great fishing...ya bringing those fillets to Blackshear slabfest![]()
