I have a Briggs and Straton 3.5 motor on my push mower and have never had any trouble out of it. This year, however, is different. I have throughly cleaned the carborator, checked the plug and still it skips. Anyone know what else I need to do?

Water maybe? This ethanol gas is really messing with some small engines.

clean the tank and put medium grade gass in it with stabill.put in a new plug . it may look god but not fire like it should . also if it has points they may need ajusting

My experience with these motors, with the new gas, is to make CERTAIN that you clean out the high jet and blow it out good. The high jet is in the bolt that holds on your carb bowl. It has a little hole in it that forms a "T". Make sure that sucker is cleaned out and blow clear with compressed air. I use carb cleaner, followed by a pipecleaner, followed by a can of air (like they use for computers).

That, in my experience, is almost ALWAYS the cause...

I have had this problem twice before and once it was the fuel filter was partially clogged and I installed a new fuel filter and it ran great. The other time it was the fuel line itself had cracks in it because it was so old. I replace the fuel line and it took care of the problem. Just two more things for you to check. These problems were both with a riding mower so I not sure if they apply to a push mower. Good luck. Wes

rebuild the carb. The rebuild kit is only 12 bucks. Maybe time for a new needle and seat. Very easy to do.

Their are no points on single plug engines no need for them....
Pull the lid and locate the coil and flywheel where the magnets meet....It should have rust built up from moisture...This is the cause of your miss-fire
Just remove the coil and sand the magnets clean and smooth then re-adjust the coil gap from the flywheel using a standard business card for a guage...VERY simple to do...
You are now properly firing
Same procedure for most all small engines that skip

If the gas is the suspect from sittin or dirty run Seafoam through it.

on a lawn mower, much better to just drain the tank and wash it out. without a picture, i dont know what type of carb you have on it. may have a diaphram, may not. may be the plug, may be worn governor spring, could be magneto or the ignition coil. or could be a small amount of trash in the carb that you missed. if you cant get pics, call me, 770-658-4955
