Default yamaha 60

posted last week about upgrading to the yamaha 60 2 stroke and have done some research.talked to a good mechanic who dabbles in drag boats and he was not real familiar with yamaha.he said to be sure it had a rpm range of 5000-6000 because it had high gear ratio.he said some motors are designed to carry a load and more top end speed is hard to achieve.i looked on the yamaha website and the 70 is the same motor with 5000-6000 rpm range.the 60 is no longer made and there is no specs.my friend selling the motor says he ran 37 mph on his 1655dlx skiff.now i am thinking that i am only going to get a few more mph's than i get now(31-34) with my 40 johnson.i was hoping to at least get into the mid 40's with the 60.if anyone out there knows anything about this, let me know.i am undecided on what to do.

Skintback, I am not an expert, but I believe with the 60 you will for sure get on plan quicker,as far as rpms are concerned they can be changed by the pitch in the prop, also one on the 60, trim and tilt plays in on top end speed also, where as the the 40 probably dosen't have it. Also you didn't specify the boat your're putting it on,is the hull weight the same or more then your friends boat.

hull is a grumman 1648.not sure about weight but a good bit less than the skiff.mine is a semi-v where the skiff is a flat bottom.he has 2 props he's used and he has raised the motor one bolt hole but he can't get anymore speed.not sure what pitch prop he has.

I'd dare to say you'd get 38-40 out of it with right prop and trimed properly at wot,and again you'd get on plane alot quicker, your boat is alot lighter than the c skiff, whether it's worth the trouble and money I don't know. Falconsmitty just aquired a bomber with 60 yamaha from reelcrappie check with those guys on rpms, prop size and speed,I think he said it was hittin 40 or a little better.

I have had it only a month but it has plenty of power. My son alone with an empty boat w/1 gas tank, Told me he got 43mph.. Top speed for me is 33mph with 4 big batteries 50 rods, 50lbs of lead 2 and all the rest of my gear and bait. The boat jumps out of the water. Compared to the turd bucket, heavier boat with 40hp evinrude, it flies.

i have a 50 and a 70 hp there isen`t 2 mph difference in the speed but the 70 jumps on plain a lot quicker . prop pitch has a lot to do with the speed or pull . just don`t prop to high and run the RPN`S to high . keep them at motor speck.

Billbob off the Indiana forum has a 75hp Yamaha Tiller. You might talk to him about them.
