    Default fly fishing for striper

Does anyone fly fish for striper? We have a great striper fishery here on the colorado river.I think in the 30 years that i have lived here, I have only seen one guy doin it. I bought a fly rod and want to give it a shot. Any advice on these fish being taken on a fly, types of flies ect.

Email Henry Cowen, a guide on Lake Lanier:

He's a very nice guy, and I'm sure he will give you some tips on tackle and flies.

Thanks for the link. It looks like Mr Cowen is at the top of his game.

I fly fish for stripers in the Arkansas River here. I have caught them on large Clouser Minnows, Deceivers, Puglisi baitfish patterns, and large bunny strip flies. Chartreuse and white is usually a good color, but not always. I also tie them in gray/white, olive/white, and blue/white.

What size rod do you use? An 8 or 9wt?

    I use a TFO TiCr 9ft 8wt. A 9wt would also be a good choice.

    Okie,

I have been fortunate enough to catch stripers on top when they are pushing shad to the surface at Lake Texoma. What a thrill!! None of the stripers were big, comparatively speaking, but they were caught on one of my first fly set-ups: a 7-wt. Cortland. Most of the fish were around 3 pounds, but as you know, they're fighters. I was about 16 or 17, and my dad's guide of 20 years or so put us within perfect fly-casting distance without spooking the school. My dad just sat in the back of the BayHawk watching and drinkin coffee and talking. And what's better is that the fish preferred a creation of my own over other patterns: a simple shad-colored bucktail fly with two discs of blue open-cell foam adhered to both sides for the head.

Caught this one this afternoon on a chartreuse/white Clouser Minnow.

I also caught a few white bass. I only got in about 30 minutes of fishing before the water started coming up and I had to leave.
