Either weight-forward or double-taper is better than a level line.

i have two boxes of wf-5-f. how do i tell which end to start spooling it on the reel? or is it the same at both ends? level line is all i've ever used.

It is not the same. It should be marked to tell you how to attach. Most WF lines come with a little "sticky" tab saying something like "attach this end to the backing".

If it's not marked, carefully uncoil the line in your yard. The WF head will be quite a bit thicker than the thin running line.

it wasn't marked or tagged like you said. i think i could bearly tell one end was bigger than the other. very little difference though. it's a cheap line i got at walmart that they were clearing out.

Did you unroll the entire line? I'm only asking because the first few feet of the front taper (the WF part) is very thin and looks very similar to the end of the line (the running line.)

Try this: stretch out the entire line on the lawn and then fold it in half so you can compare both ends. That should make it obvious which end is the thick WF end. The WF taper should be 30-40' long and much thicker than the running line.

d4d hit it on the head old. The only problem is if your eyes are anything like mine are getting it might be easier to tell by feeling the line between your fingers.

And, wf is WAY mo' better than the old level tapers.

The weight forward line was designed for casting bass bugs and popper style flies.

A lot of people find it easier to load the rod with a WF line especially with a rod that has a fast taper.
