I have heard lots of good reports about Talquin. Considering a trip this winter. Have also heard about hazards. Fishing a new lake is tough enough and spending a vacation worrying about damaging a boat or motor takes a lot of the fun out of it. Is the lake tough to navigate? Any thoughts on the best time to be there? I really like jigging shallow visible cover. Any suggestions on techniques for the lake.
Thanks
Speckfinder, it is hard finding a lake better to fish for crappie than what Talquin is. Yes, there are hazards there, but common sense and paying attention is the key there. I have met several people down at Talquin that are from Kentucky. I have been fishing there for 4 years and have not had any boat damage YET, but the lake is not that hard to navigate at all. I fish out of Lake Talquin Lodge which is centrally located on the lake..There is alot of good fishing within minutes of there. We mainly troll the lake and November and December are usually fantastic months to be fishing there. I troll 99% of the time, but I am sure there are some people at Lake Talquin Lodge that may be able to give you some info on when and where "jigging" would be productive for you. Just holler if you head to Talquin. Usually Rawhide, Lightwirehooker or me will be there almost any given weekend from now till summer and I'll be glad to help you out any way I can.
I Love having A Crappie Day:D
These guys do help us newbies. I am still learning. This is one of the best crappie lakes I have fished. It Beats KY lake hands down. As told to me by TNT, watch out for the birds standing on the water. They are actually standing on a stump. Just run at slow speed. You will see some fishermen in bass boats running wide open. It's call russian roulette. A stump will find you, just depends on how fast you are going, slower, less damage.
Do a search on Talquin and learn from questions asked and answered for additional info.
Good luck.
See you on the lake or at KY lake.

Talquin is a great wintertime lake. Though trolling is the best way to catch crappie at Talquin, you can vertical jig up the main river and The little river with great catches. I would try the main river up from Coes landing in January. The lake is not near as hard to navigate as the stories tell, most of the timber is well below the water line. Be careful in the river and creeks.
Shoot, there ain't nothing to that lake as far as hazards go. I run wide arse open all the time!
I'm also in RAWHIDE's bote when I do that.....:D![]()
I am fired up!
For almost a year I have come here to read the state and general forum boards, always picking up new information in regards to speck fishing.
Finally got my new Tracker this past summer and have been exploring the local lakes(Clermont, Butler, Harris chains, Central florida areas etc.)
During this time I have read a number of threads / topics talking about this Lake Talquin....................The more I learned about the lake, the more I knew I had to be there.
Finally nutted up and made reservations for mid January at LTL for almost a week.
Got a trip scheduled with Lightwirehooker for the low down on the lake before a week of exploring.
I cant wait, I feel like a little kid waiting for christmas :D
Thanks for all the insights and info you guys post around here...........
55 days and counting................![]()
