Do you have a boat?
If yes - go to Kissimmee Chain, about 40 minutes from Lakeland, look for a fleet of spec fisherman. Drop some corks and drift some minnows. Feel free to improvise and troll, tight line, spider rig or even flip in the pads. Kissimmee chain has it all.
If no - go to teneroc, the pier on lake parker, or the banks of saddle creek park... possibly the area
It is a long ride from Lakeland to Talquin. Monroe or Harris are both about 1 hour away.
Check the Lakeland Ledger's weekly fish report to see lakes around Lakeland that are performing well.

You come all the way to Florida and then want to fish fresh water? Go saltwater fishing in Tampa bay.
The Slabfest that we have here in central Florida is just a very informal get=to=gather. RULES -- ENTRY FEE What are they??
As you can see by the sticky posts we vote on where and when we fish.
We have two certificates that gets passed around, one for the largest crappie and a second one for the heaviest 7 fish.
After fishing we have a weigh in, then clean the fish, cook (deep fry), and have a friendly picnic style lunch.
Everyone brings something from the list, which I post, and sometimes we have an unexpected something to eat.
We have tried several lakes in central Florida and we have found that Lake Monroe, located near Sanford, FL and Harris Chain of Lakes, located between Leesburg and Tavares, FL. are easily accessible and give a lot of water surface to fish.
Of course we need someone to co-ordinate each get-to-gather and our group is small, therefore we haven't tried to branch out to other lakes.
If you would like to join the group, just chime in and we would like to welcome you into the fold.
