Talking BlueGilling in Tampa FL

Today i went out with my friend and caught 11 bluegill in a canal. I caught them off of ham and hot dog. But i was wondering if any one knew any better baits for them. Also i sometimes go in a lake and catch them on grubs but is there any other good baits to catch em??? There is also another problem sometimes i go in a spot and catch 1 or 2 and sometimes 5 or 6 is there a way to tell if theres more bluegill in a spot or if theres things that bluegill might be attracted 2 where you can find more then others??? Thanks

For bluegills, the best bait you can get is live Crickets.

Usually you can see the bluegills on their beds which will be sandy spots with little craters everywhere. Pretty easy to spot. But you can pull quite a few off of one bed if they haven't been fished out already.

Crickets are always good bream bait, but here in Florida grass shrimp will usually out-produce crickets. And grass shrimp are free if you have a net and some hydrilla or eelgrass patches handy where you are fishing.

Here is one for ya. Get a can of Spam. Cut the meat into 1/4" slices, then cut those into 1/4" strips, then cut those into 1/4" squares. You can get about 50 baits per slice, and about 300 baits per can that way. This is what I use to catch a LOT of bluegill for the trotlines. It is cheap, considering, and the only drawback is one hit and it's gone. Good luck and good fishin.

I have my best luck with night crawlers or red worms.I usually cut the night crawler into 3-4 pieces & red worms in 1/2.

Yep, we've even used nightcrawlers and worms as well and they work great.

Bluegills aren't really picky when it comes to their choice of grub. Just take the advice given here from everyone and see what works best for you.

You can't go wrong with any of em I'm sure!
